Do you think it's better to submit a picture that you know won't break any records or not submit anything at all? I'm predicting about 5.5 for this picture of mine, certainly not above 6. To submit, or not to submit?

I learn something from every submission, which makes a high score nice but not necessary for something of value to be gained.

if you predict a 5.5 I'd say go for it if that's an ok score for you. If you know you'll be mad after at how bad it's doing then no. I learned that the hard way... a few times. I agree that you learn something from every submission but generally if I already know it will do badly, I know why where as if I don't know, then it's helpful, hehe.

I'm really very new to this site, but the way I see it, is that at this point I must submit as much as possible. For me, this is a learning place and while I suspect that one picture will do better than another, it's always a gamble. I took a huge risk with my "Year You Were Born" shot. My best beloved mumbled into his hypothetical beard and didn't think much of it at all - really rattled my confidence ...and maybe it wasn't a great shot, but it was an experiment and it paid off for me: 12th place. This last week, I again went out on a limb...I could have submitted a technically fine diagonals photo: great lighting, perfect diagonal placement of 3 beautiful aloes in a moody environment that in hindsight would have fetched me a 6 at least...but I couldn't rest with it and went for an outlandish composition instead. It's not being favoured at all and I am going to end with a 5.5 and a middle of the road placement: but it's all good. It's what you can live with in yourself, and what brings you JOY and peace. Don't make life more complicated than it needs to be :)

Always submit! Only reason I ever pull an entry (has only happened like 2-3 times) is when I am sure it will be seen as not meeting the challenge.

I only submit it when I like it. Does not depend on the score.
Negative point of this strategy is that I do not like a lot of what I shoot for challenges.... So I enter app 20 challenges a year.

I'll submit WHATEVER I can find, though I won't try to shoe-horn my way into a challenge.

I definitely submit to every contest I can. Its an great opportunity to judge your learning progress, and while your score won't necessarily reflect the artistic merit of your shot, it WILL reflect how sellable it is to the "majority" of potential customers.

Yes, its a very commercial way of looking at it, but I think its not far off the mark. If a lot of people here like your shot, chances are you might get a similar reaction when selling your images or your skill.

I know I've submitted some shots that I REALLY liked, and they ended up tanking, but that doesn't mean that they are bad - it just means I need to work on making commercially viable shots.

I think I only missed ONE contest (light on white) since joining, and thats because I simply was too tied up with work. I am doing my best to keep up, even if that means submitting a last minute piece of crap :)

Submitted! Thanks for the replies everyone! Every picture I've submitted so far has been a great learning experience so I figure I'll keep that trend going. Screw my average!
