Yesterday I shot my college's basketball game for the school paper which I am the photo editor. All of these were shot with my 50 mm 1.8 D at ISO 1600 at 1/400 shutterspeed or ISO 1250 at 1/250 shutterspeed. Aperture was around 2.0 or 2.2. I also had available a canon rebel and tamron 80-200 2.8. But I didn't like those results as much with its high ISO necessary for the dim gym. Another helpful tip I realized its to make sure your camera is in continuous focus as opposed to the single focus lock I am used to. I also did alot of shots with both eyes open and could see the focus in one eye and try to see where the action was a going with the other eye. Here are some shots trying to cover different aspects of the game. Mostly ended up under the hoop covering the offense, :). Any comments/critiques would be great, on an individual image or as a whole group.

awesome!
if cropping dont give you enough pixels/details, you might wanna get in closer to the action (player faces, capture some sweat) - just a personal preference though.

Yeah I have plenty of pixels to work with as most of these crops are fairly minor. However once you get closer with crops the noise becomes alittle more prevalent. Thanks for the comment.

nice work, joe. as you'll find, it's all practice, practice, practice. it's easy to gravitate towards the baseline, but make sure you shoot the whole way around--it will keep your images from developing a sameness to them. shoot from both ends of midcourt tables (this will put you in close for some nice coach shots). also, go for some over the top shots during huddles. you might feel like you're intruding/interrupting, but they won't even notice you.

keep it up!
