anyone know much about this camera yet?

I was considering it pretty seriously. I really like IS/VR and I can't afford to pay top dollar for a lens every time to get it. It makes sense to have it in the body (though you don't get to see the effect of stabilization in the view finder when it's done via the CCD.

But I tried the alpha in the store (went to circuit city) and didn't like the autofocus at all. Also, I couldn't figure out how to get it to stop autofocusing and only autofocus when I half pressed.

While at the store I tried a Nikon D80 and REALLY liked it. I liked the big bright viewfinder, and the focus. And with the 18-200 VR lens, I hopefully would only need one additional lens (something wider), so I wouldn't miss the built in VR too much.

In any case, check out the camera in the store before making your final decision.

As far as online, it has been well reviewed. It has the same sensor as the Nikon D80/D200(though nikon says they have made to order electronics in it which allows them to separate the RGB data coming from it (the Nikon shows separate R G B histograms). It had a good feel otherwise.

It was camera of the year, for POP Photography.

Theres a good review and comparison of resolution and noise at //www.dpreview.com. They compare it to the Nikon and Canon.

The lenses are less expensive than going Nikon, and presumably good. It has a special dynamic range enhancing feature that I don't think other cameras have.

There are also some people here on DPC with the camera, so I'm sure someone will chime in.

If you liked the VF of the D80, spare your wallet and don't try a 5D or 1DS2 :P

Check the equipment pages: //www.dpchallenge.com/camera.php?CAMERA_ID=1533

It seems to be a good camera, but suffers from high ISO noise. Nikon, along with their RGB enhancements, has also implemented better noise-canceling algorithms specific to the sensors they have sony make for them.

If you are going to do mostly outdoor, or indoor with flash shots, it's a mighty fine camera. There are a lot of good Minolta maxxum lenses still out there on ebay and other places for cheaper than the new Sonys (still manufactured by Minolta) or the Zeiss lenses. The Zeiss, of course, are just phenomenal lenses, but very expensive.

The other thing to note, is that if you buy some Sigma lenses you can get OS plus the on-camera AS, double your stabilization pleasure ;)

Didn't you see this switch?

Any lens made by Minolta, Sigma, Tokina or Tamron to fit the 7D/5D will fit. I got a Minolta 50mm/1.8 for $80 on EBay. Sony makes some good lenses for it too. But, cost much more. 50mm f/1.4 new runs about $350.

I am really into this camera. I'm just waiting for my money and will buy Alpha in the mid of December. You can't imagine how many forums and reviews I researched, I nearly went crazy. But finally I made my choice, and I'm glad.

Yes, but I didn't want manual focus, I just didn't want CONTINUOUS focus!

I own both. The focusing of D80 is way faster and quiter than the A100 -- that's the first thing that I have noticed between the two. :)

You should go to store(s) and try both. I think the price of the Sony has already dropped by almost 150 bucks (retail).

While I think the A100 does have slower autofocus than the Canon and Nikon, to be fair you do have two of the worst lenses in terms of AF speed for the A100; I presume that if you tried it with, say, an 18-70, it would be much faster.

Yeah, my lenses for the A100 sucks. I don't have anything against the body. But yeah, using the kit lenses, the D80 is still faster. :D
