I'd had my eye on a D200 Nikon for a while but with the expenses associated with having a 15 month old boy had made it difficult to justify the cost. However, today I was reviewing a rewards program I enrolled in four years ago and realized I had an incredible amount of points I earned from hotel stays. (my work requires that I travel with my staff several times a year) Anyway there was a Nikon Digital SLR that turned out to be a D50 available for less point than I had and I ordered it! For FREE!!!! Not the D200 but maybe someday soon. The hardest part will be waiting the 2-4 weeks to get it! Any tips in the mean time would be appreciated! Woooo Hooooo!!!

Congrats! No, it's not a D200, but you still have every right to be ecstatic, the D50 is a fine camera! Just browse around here and see some of the photos people have been able to capture with a D50. It is a more than capable camera. Enjoy! :-)

Hey congrats - Not a bad use of points at all!! Welcome to the money pit that is cameras with detachable bits. I assume you started the conversation about what lenses to buy right :-)

Tips... um..Yeah, The body is the easy and cheapest part of the deal :-)

Hey Rob! How are you? The more I research this camera, The more excited I become!

OK. I've had some time to think about this and read more about the camera. It comes with the nikor 18-55mm lens and I'm probably going to buy a 50 mm 1.8 for $100. I don't have a lot of dough right now are there any different or additional suggestions out there? I just received confirmation via e-mail and begining to realize that it's true!

Cannot help much on Nikon stuff but I hear the 50mm is an obvious choice for the $, same as in the Canon world (he says although I don't have that one :-). I also hear that the 18-200VR (image stabilised) is really good if you can get hold of it.

Good luck and have fun.....

Edit: Cause I cannot spell even with the built in spell check in FF :-/

Yeah, I hear ya... I have the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 which is good to very good and is available in a Nikon mount. At less than 1/2 the price (they seem to have a rebate going right now) might be worth a look. It does not focus anywhere near as fast as the Canon USM and I assume Nikon lenses (maybe not?), so might be an issue for you on fast cars and stuff :-). Obviously you loose range and the VR as well.

Congrats on the D50!!. I used that set-up all the time with 50 mm and kit lens. The things i suggest getting are a circular polarizer filter. Its a 52mm mount and fits both of your lens choices. The second would be the remote control, which is about 20 dollars. It allows you to use the bulb function so you can take up to 30 minute night shots, and trigger the camera for shots with you and your family in it and long exposure shots without having to touch the camera and get any shake. Congrats! I took probably my first 50 challenges with my D50 and learned tons before upgrading. You'll love it.

Well..... I know now not to go to the camera shop with money. I anticipated that I'd have lots of holiday photos to take and wasn't really happy with results I've gotten with the kit lens...I walked into a local shop and inqired if they had the 50mm 1.4 and if so, How much? The next thing, it was leaving with me....Saves me having to buy the the 1.8 so I saved $100? Right? I'll take it for a test tommorrow.

I intend to use it still but for outdoor. I wanted something that'll work indoors without flash and more control over DOF as I go to a lot of indoor Motorcycle shows.
