I don't comment as much as I used to, but I also think that it is in part due to spending more time in the forums (I can only write so much) and finding that, the more I comment, I have to write longer and detailed notes or it feels superficial.
Writing comments is one of the most educational things you can do FOR YOURSELF, which is one of the reasons the Critique Club is popular.
I also like to have both positive and critical components in a comment, but I don't find it hard to find something to like in almost every photo I've seen here. |

Bashing people who do comment
Or my personal unfavorate. Leaving the wrong comment.

The thing is, I don't think either of those threads are bashing people for commenting. The first thread was commenting on it seeming odd someone would leave the same, short, not terribly informative cut-and-paste comment on the same pic over and over and almost entirely concentrated on why that might be. The second thread was someone complaining that someone was saying they'd vote a 1 on all future pictures with the same topic, which frankly, I have a problem with as well. "I'm going to vote all pictures containing the colour blue a 1" would deserve similar ranting IMO. There was very little if anything that I would consider bashing people for comments and the first thread didn't even have to do with negative comments. Certainly nothing that would scare ME off (good thing, too, given how many comments I've already left).
I don't know. It's not like I'm going to force people at gunpoint to comment, or leave any fewer comments myself (I will comment on anything I vote on, on the theory that if I can come up with a score I can come up with a reason), regardless of how few comments I get. I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in about the whole thing. :)
As far as the "If you don't have anything nice to say...", while I understand the instinct, I think when it comes to critiquing the rule is "If you can't think of a reasonably nice way to say it..." instead. That is, I may say something unpleasant about a photo, but I try to phrase it nicely (you know: "YAWN!" vs "This subject didn't really appeal to me"); the difference between 'criticizing' and 'critiquing' is really just that.
Anyhow. Enough blather. I promise that anyone who comments on my pictures will either be appreciated or ignored, as appropriate to the tone, but I guess that doesn't help with challenges as they're blind. I suppose if I come up with photos I really want detailed critiques on I'll just solicit for them specifically if I don't get them otherwise. |

i hardly ever comment these days, due to the fear of private messages being received ( i have had a few, just because i took the time to comment)
now i really don't understand why ppl have to reply to a comment via a private msg, yes there must be many reasons, but is it worth the bother?
what do the ppl who do this hope to acheive, that your score that you originally received from the commentor, will now go miraculously to 10 , just cos you sent them a PM, and now they totally understand your picture because you have had the opportunity to explain in detail why you chose the subject, lighting etc?

These two are not mutually exclusive; I suspect those who say something nice tend to be reasonable in their criticisms as well... |

I haven't been "bashed" for leaving a comment (well, once, when I mentioned that I didn't like the border and got not 1, not 2 but THREE nasty emails from the guy telling me what nerve I had to say his border took attention away from the subject), however, I have been told that I was too NICE on a photo. When I went back to check out the shot. I actually hadn't said anything GOOD about that photo at all. lol. I had just worded it to sound nice, even though I was pointing out flaws. lol Oh well, can't win em all. |
