i shot all of these indoors near a window with the 50mm F1.8. wasn't a planned shoot, just a last minute 'hey while you're here why don't you take some pics' kinda thing. |
He, he, Oilers?!?!? Come on! :))))) Go Sens! |

In particular, the face closeups. |
looking at those images (and their very nice, btw...), i'm betting he's got the 50mm close to wide open. if he's using anything smaller than 2.8, i'll eat my... snack...
what? you expect me to say i'd eat my camera? silly girl...

I would have to agree to a point, if those arent crops he is pretty close to 2.2, 2.5 apeture to get a short dof on the 50mm. That DOF is very close to what I get on my 85 1.8 when I shot close up and have it on those settings. Typical portrait settings for apeture are around 4.0-5.6 but that all depends on distance and lens when shooting. Good luck and be sure and post your results. With your other work I'm sure they will be fabulous.

I know...i couldn't help but mock the Oiler's jersey. and the live in Flames country no less. Sacrilege.
mostly i was shooting wide open because of the lack of light. I like the shallow DOF...just have to make sure you shoot their faces straight on if you want it all to be in focus. |

Yeah, I did. Although I think I need to work at "being in control". It was somewhat amazing to me that people don't seem to mind havind pictures made. |

I much prefer to do this also, it gives a nice softer light, sometimes I compensate the flash by +1 to add some brightness as it dependson what available lighting I have. (With the SB600 flash)
