I used to let the low scores bother me, but the more I thought about it, I enjoy taking the pictures that I do and will continue to do so even if I know I will get pummeled in the voting process.

There have been times when I've thought about looking back at similar challenges and try to re-create what the winner did, but then I just decided to try and come up with my own ideas even if most people probably won't like them. I do and I guess that's what counts. I have learned a lot on this site but you certainly couldn't see it in my scores. Because of my DPC learning experiences, I now try things that I've never done before and to me, that's a step in the right direction even if it doesn't score well

My goal was to get a 6 but I gave that up and don't bother with that anymore. A few days ago, I received a comment from a DPC member on an image that scored really low. That comment made my day. It was like they actually saw what I was trying to do. If I get one comment per challenge from someone that really likes what I did, I'm happy.

I agree, one nice comment made by any one person, that realizes the essence behind your photo is reward in itself. Not every image is a "Wow" image.

I start my scoring at a 5 where I consider most of my photos to be at. I move forward 1 or 2 points while voting on all photos. I notice most of my scores on you guy's photos are a 6-7.........and you want to know why???

Because generally speaking your talent is above average, or you most likely would not even be here!!

I hate to say it, but I have given out a few 2's and 3's on slight occasions, because I am using my image as a base-line, by seeing how my own image is scoring. I try to make a nice comment on the low scoring images because I know how it feels to become discouraged (while looking at my own low scores). I live and I learn. I strive to become better.

I don't just toss out lots of 9's and 10's either because they are indeed saved for the special images. But, there are so many good images here. Such great talent.

Sherpet don't worry dear, you are a sweetheart and your images are lovely.

An aside....I apologize for all my ugly pics you had to look at! Just you wait. I'm coming to get ya, I've been studying!!

That "good" is not a "site definition", it's just a directional marker; they have bad on one side and good on the other. I'd personally prefer to see "worse" and "better" or something like that.

You can't use academic grading profiles like "75% = C+" in a place like this; that kind of grading only applies in cases where there are right and wrong answers, and that's emphatically not what we are dealing with here. Instead we are dealing with peoples' own, aesthetic values and the scores are going to be all over the map. That's why it's so difficult to get into the 7's, let alone the 8's.

I'm a tough voter myself; my average vote cast is just over 5.0, and I believe that's right where it ought to be. I have high standards when it comes to judging photography, but I apply them consistently. Incidentally, I almost never give a vote lower than 4.

Robert... you suprise me.

You, of all people, with your long history with and appreciation of good photography would be so harsh in your scoring. Are the entries here that poor?

Agreed that aesthetics rather than concrete right and wrong answers are what is being judged here, but it is inconsequential because a numerical value is still assigned and that is what matters.

When DPCers complain about their low scores, they rarely mention the other images surrounding theirs that also got low scores. They simply wonder why theirs got such a low numerical value. They do that because in most every other numerical evaluation system they have ever encountered in their lives, scoring in the low 50% level is utter failure. They think their images are judged worthless.

Images recieve low numerical values because we've institutionalized low scoring. Look how many people in this very discussion are now questioning themselves for giving high scores.

As long as we, as individuals, maintain instutionalized low scoring values we will continue to frustrate and discourage photographers from participation and when that happens we are all losers.

Your own average score given is 5.8, at the last school I went to, 58% was a failing grade. So, using your own reasoning, you consider the level of photography on DPC here to be failure, a very low "D" at best.

Maybe you want to give high scores to make people feel good and all warm inside. I say that's a load of crap. If you want warm and fuzzy, show your picture to your mom, spouse, or anyone who'll tell you what you want to hear.

This sure is a busy thread, so here's my one & 1/2 cent worth about it. I feel that there needs to be room in the scale to rate between the good, great, and excellent, then finally, the one in a hundred or so that just stops the mouse, and you have to just absorb it emotionally, or be transported by it, instead of just looking at it. Its good to have 1 thru 10. For me, some photos are like a scent from a long ago time that lock on to something in my past, and stir mental images or feelings from that time. These are the ones that I feel best about, but not always the ones that are the most popular. I don't see any pics here that I would rate less than 2, but I shoot a lot of 1's and 2's. I just shot 3K vacation pics in 10 days last month, and got about 50 images that I feel like I would call average or above average, and about 5 that I would rate 7 or possibly 8. The one in that entire group that really has the "wow effect" when people see it looks like about a 4 or 5 to me. I guess that I have high expectations for the future. My pics that I thought were great 20 years ago, are what I would now rate about 4 1/2. If I don't get any negative feedback, then there's no reason for me to strive for excellence.
My take on rating is that there are a lot of pics, including a lot that I shoot, that really don't cross the line from personal into public very well. These are not bad pics, just not "grabbers," unless you have something in your past that connects you to that individual picture. I hand out a lot of 4's, (just honest, not mean) for that reason. I put one that I feel is about a 3.5 in the "Diagonal" contest just to see how the contest works, and to learn more about how this website works.
My other hobby is launching watermelons and pumpkins 1/2 mile or more with an big air cannon, so I may not fit into the "average websurfer/photo-hobbyist" box very well.
This is a good message board, and the human energy and interaction and sharing of knowlege here is great! It takes all of us to keep it interesting, and to keep it thriving.
Isn't human interaction the primary reason we make photographs?
As I see it, if everyone enjoyed exactly the same thing in photos, then we would only need one photographer, and one camera for the entire planet. Then, we could all agree, and give every picture another glorious, boring "10 ! " That's not a very pretty picture.

He said he speaks of the group as a whole, not for the group. While I pretty much disagree with everything stdavidson has posted in this thread, at least be accurate as to what you are disagreeing with him about.

and not only that, this time we can make it twice the beatability!
that translates to more beatings, more satisfaction and twice the annoyance!

... but before it gets locked i'll reply to stdavidson if i may .....

to be honest ... yes. i find a lot of the images a bit samey. i don't know enough to vote on technical merit, so I vote on the image as an image. i've always liked images, wheteher painted or drawn or photographed.

i'm just finishing my voting on the pale on white images and i found it a bit of an effort.

i like images which are striking, unusual, imaginative, well executed and which make an emotional appeal to me. i think i noticed somebody above who thought it was unfair to base one's vote on some of these factors - but i think it's legitimate. i always try to vote fairly and not out of spite or malice.

i'm not claiming that mine are any better by the way. i haven't got to a 6 yet and that seems fair - but i may improve yet, who knows.

and on the other hand i have seen a lot of images on this site which have been really moving and inspiring - and i've given them 10's. I also give quite a few 9s and 8s.

hope this is a satisfactory explanation.

now I'm off to watch my entry in the free study continue its nose dive from the high point of 4 which it reached after the first few votes.

You cannot kill that which was already dead. You cannot lock Pandora's box once it has been opened. And if the thread is locked, it will only be a matter of days before Pandora comes riding back on her dead horse. Therefore, I say do not lock it, but rename it to "The official, ongoing Troll voting thread" and let's enjoy it for what it is - a daily dose of entertainment and drama for those of us who don't watch reality TV. :D

As if she doesn't feel bad enough, now we've lumped her in with the more unsavory personalities of the site. Might as well make it official and have her join our gang. Do you have a leather jacket, Shez? A velvet one would be fine too. Leroy, melt the you-know-what for the initiation.
