Hey everyone,
i recently got a Nikon D50, which i am enjoying greatly. I only have the kit lens though and i am wondering what would be a good second lens. Thx, ryand

That would greatly depend on how much you want to spend and what type of shots you are going to be taking. You will get some good suggestions here though I am sure.

Ryand,
There is just no way of answering your question with the information you provided. You need to provide some details as to what you are trying to accomplish, what type(s) of photography interest you. A 500mm telephoto isn't much good for portrait photography and a 50mm prime is not much good for shooting animals in nature. Give us some details and you will probably get some suggestions.

Check out my profile....

The list of lenses purchased chronologically goes from bottom to top. I really enjoyed my 70-300 lens to really learn DOF and telephoto shots...I took this shot with it, so quality is certainly good enough for most I say...

Edit...just thought of this....

Actually I don't use it anymore, do you want to purchase it from me? PM me if you are interested...

Remember though that with the some 70-300 Cutter mentioned you can do macro too. ;)

I don't think the Nikon 70-300 will do macro without extension tubes, both the Sigma and Tamron versions will, and are around $220 or so.

I've found my 12-24 is FAR more enjoyable and useful than my 70-200 VR.

Cannot state how much I love this lens, and how much I thought I would never use it.

My poor VR just sits in the bag - in fact, make me an offer! :-)

$50 and box of crackerjacks, I'll pay shipping ;-)

Seriously, come Tax time, I'm PMing you.

If you wanna go macro first, you really can't go wrong with the medium-ish investment of the following lens, which I also own...

Sigma 105mm macro

Oh, one more bit of advice -

Go fast.

There is nothing like shooting with these fast lenses. f/2.8 on my workhorse lens, and f/4 on my 12-24 (shot handheld at 1/10 of a second and it looks great!) f/2.8 on the 70-200.

I know the $250 f/4-5.6 lenses are tempting, but there's a reason that the fast ones are still garnering $1,000 and more. (I paid $1,800 for my 70-200 - and the images it produces are just jaw-dropping).

So save your pennies, and go for those fast lenses - your images will be much better because of the better optics they have, and you'll love how often you can shoot with natural light!

I had a chunk of change, and opted to buy lenses before upgrading to the D200 - I'm so glad I did. My images are much better with that great glass.

hope that helps...

I'll second this choice. Take a look at Ursula's photos and you will see what it can do in skilled hands. Cutter's aint bad either.

BTW - it is my next lens assuming I don't come into 5k for a Nikon 200-400 VR.
