I am currently in the market for purchasing my first DLSR (exciting times) and want some suggestions and any help available. I am a decently poor college student, so money is an issue for me, but I still want to buy a quality product that will take great pictures while I travel. I have stumbled across a few package deals for both cameras, the XTi obviously being a bit more expensive. Being my first DSLR and still in the learning process should I spend the extra cash on the more advanced XTi or will the D50 satisfy me for now? Any help is appreciated.

P.S. I love you.

There are a load of threads on this subject.. I suggest you go into a store and hold each of them in your hand and see what feels better for you. I have a D50 and it takes awsome photos and the kit lens is brilliant especially the 18-70.

I just recently got into the DSLR world and am also a decently poor college student. I went with the Digital Rebel XT (350D), I couldn't justify the extra $200 for the XTi. You can pick up a new XT kit for around $600. The XTi is better, but in my opinion not by much. I would highly recommend that you look into the XT instead of the XTi, you can spend the $200 difference on accesories. :)

I totally agree with SamDoe1. If you are on a budget and this is your first DSLR, look at the XT and not the XTi.

Now for my opinion. I think that the Rebels (XT and XTi) are much better than the D50. They are more on the level with the D70s and D80. Maybe not totally but way closer than the D50. And what MAK said is also true, the Nikon 18-70mm kit lens rocks and is much better than the 18-55mm kit lens. Be warned though, most of the D50 kits include the 18-55mm lens and the 18-70mm kit lens will cost you $200+ more.

Now for my recommendation. Buy a Rebel XT body only for about $510ish and then buy a decent zoom lens like a Canon 28-105 II F3.5/4.5 USM for $220. Or step up to something like the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 lens for about $360. That makes the total somewhere between $730 and $870. Check out at BuyDig.com.

Good luck.

Edit: fixed Bugdig.com

Yeah, the leftover XT's are hard to pass up if you're getting in now. Good pixel count, and great highISO imaging.

I got the body only. For my lenses, I picked up a 50mm f/1.8 (can't go wrong for $75) and the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lenses. Both are excellent and I don't see myself buying a new lens for a while (yeah right). I bought the camera body from newegg.com, the 50mm lens and accesories from Amazon.com, and the Tamron lens from buydig.com. That seemed to be the best combination of places for the lowest price. I also picked up a Sigma EF500 Super flash for $200 from sigma4less.com but that's not really needed.
