okay,
So every single winning shot on here (just about) has this in the post processing--convert from RAW, levels, curves....
What is the best way to learn how to use these two tools? I feel like I'm blindly moving them around without knowing what they will ultimately do. I'd like to have a little more purpose when changing levels and curves, and to have a better idea of what my picture will turn out like before i move them.
are there any rules of thumb or easy ways to explain how they work? |

I'm no expert, but I use levels to set the black point and the white point, ie. to make decide what becomes pure black and what becomes pure white. I add an S-shaped curve to increase contrast. Adding contrast with curves allows you to add contrast to the specific tonal area that you want. Just try adding various types of S-curves to an image to see how they affect the contrast. You should also be doing levels and curves on adjustment layers so that you can undo or edit the adjustment. |

Take a look at this tutorial. Bunch of bood, basic information there.
Remember that anything that can be done with levels can be done with curves, and of course much, much more.
You be watching the histogram carefully while adjustoing curves. I strongly suggest setting it to display individual red, green and blue channels. Once you get the hang of using curves, you'll wonder how you ever did without it. |

Ron Bigelow has a bunch of great tutorials on post processing as well.
