Nope, use an Archos. Mp3, videos, and digital photo wallet.
What are your needs? AA batteries, small, videos, etc? |

The Sandisk Sansa e-series. I have the e260, which is a 4GB flash-based player. (they go up to 8GB) I REALLY like it. The sound quality is excellent (with good headphones, of course), the UI is very nice, and it is realitively inexpensive, especially after some of the rebates floating around. I paid around $130 for mine, and that was back when they first came out.

I'm not sure of the needs... it's for a Christmas gift. I'm not sure why exactly she wants one but I'm assuming it will mostly be for music.
EDIT: And to think I was done with my Christmas shopping. :(

How is it for organizing your music? Any issues or oddities you've found? |

You may want to check out the options from a company called iRiver. They are well respected, have won a few awards for their design and generally put out good products.
I have a small MP3 player I use for running from them. The model I have wouldn't be appropriate if you want a MP3 player that can organize a library, but it's awesome for mararthons.
I have also had a MP3 CD player from them and it had a great run before finally kicking the bucket.
The best thing I like about it is it plays .WMA. 95% of my music is in that format...

Not quite sure what you mean, but you can transfer music 2 ways: 1) like a data drive, and 2) using Window Media Player to syn/transfer. I use WMP, and it works just fine. So I guess you can use WMP to organize your music.
Once the music is on the player, you can search for a song by album or artist.
The only software that comes with the player is a well-done small app that transfers video and pictures to the device.
I hope this helps.

I'll echo the Doc's recommendation for iRiver. I like mine and it seems to do well with the "play music" part. That's all I use it for so I can't tell you about any other features. The organization of tunes depends on how you load it. Requires WMP 10 (which is free) for loading stuff, but it's fairly straightforward once you get the whole shebang set up. |

Out of curiosity, why not an iPod?

I did a lot of reading on cnet before deciding on one for my son. I ended up going with Creative Labs - overall, their reviews were the best and I'm familiar with other products of theirs.
I didn't go with IPOD because they are more expensive - a 4GB Nano is $100 more than the 4GB CL Zen Photo I got a great deal on... |

Yeah, others have mentioned Creative players as a good choice. A couple thought the Zen V Plus was the way to go. Anyone have opinions on this model? |

I have had Archos stuff for years and it's good solid stuff from my experience. Personally, I would avoid any (either) of the options that are tied to specific religions :-)
It depends where you plan to source music and how you want to deal with "protected" sources. This is a tangent and I ain't lifting that rock but you need to consider this almost before the player if you want those options. |

Yes, neither religion is currently in the running although I think it would be prudent to purchase a device that can work with certain sacraments of each. |

honestly, I've had a couple of mp3(mp4) players, including some more expensive ones like Sony's... and I have to conclude that... they are all more or less the same in terms of sound quality. Get a good quality earphone/headphone. Just stay off totally unbranded players and you'll be fine. |

I am looking for the same. The Creative Zen:M and the Microsoft Zune looked interesting. Although the Zune only looks interesting as a potential updates are released. |
