I desparately need more memory on my laptop, but cannot find any info on how to open it up and install it. Any help out there on a Dell Inspiron 5160?
I can get a 1G for $139.95. Since I don't even know if my 512meg is in 1 slot or 2, I'll just get 2gig and be in heaven!

First, make sure that it can take 2Gig.

Normally memory in laptops goes underneath in one of the unscrewable compartments. So try unscrewing them until you find the memory.

Try that page and the "scan my system" thing may be able to tell you about which slots are full.

Hey thanks!I went to Crucial first, but found out that Dell is cheaper (who wouldda thunk it?)
2 gig is the max for it and I am still not sure if I'll do 1 gig or 2 - might start off with 1 and save a bit of money :)
Ran the scan and the 512 is in 1 slot so the other is open - yippee! I am off to order it.
Thanks again :)

Sometimes the slots need to have the same amount of memory in each slot.
Check if it is two banks of one (Can have different MB values in each slot) or one bank of two (Must have same MB value in each slot).

If he's getting 2GB, he could get 1GB for each slot, if he's getting 1GB then either another 512 for the other slot or 1-1GB for the current slot is fine and the 512 can go up for sale for the latter choice.
