I currently have an old inkjet that doesn't print photos very well anymore. I get lines in the images etc.
I'm looking to buy a new printer that is good for general purpose printing but also does the job well for photos. I'm earning the poor New Zealand dollar so keeping the cost down would be good.
Has anyone got any suggestions that would suit?

Plenty of printers around, surprisingly enough warehouse Stationary has some good ones and often at sale prices.
If I were buying one tho I would make sure that it has the option to plug in the cameras storeage card, saves a lot of messing around when you can just plug them in.
An make sure they have separate cartridges for each color, Makes for cheaper running costs |

I don't know what low cost mean for you but thisprinter
is using the same ink and is producing the same output as the more expensive r1800. the prints last forever (almost anyway!!!). Probably not as good as a pro printer for B&W and matte paper but with the gloss optimizer it can't get much better for glossy, semi-gloss or luster paper.
You get 8 independant ink tank and it does a pretty good job fro everyday printing too (tough it may use more ink for plain text printing than a regular inkjet printer. you can put a wide variety of high quality paper in it and most of them already have profiles buil by the paper maker.
