So it's ok to rail on someone because their grammar wasn't up to snuff, but spelling/typos are off limits? (Scratching my head...)

How were you at spelling? :) |

Mist says ' I probably won't vote on "postcards", because I have an entry,'
I am (easily..) confused - I thought the idea was that members did vote on the challenges they had entered? Can someone tell me if I have got horribly muddled-up? As it happens I am new and eager, and have voted on every photo in every challenge since I joined a few weeks ago - I may get a life soon...
Also - how do you add a part of some-one else's post (as in Originally posted etc without cutting and pasting? |

I don't count off for spelling in picture titles. But in the case of a postcard challenge where the text is an integral part of the image itself, then yes, I can understand counting off for it. I think you should go with your native language on the card (if not English) unless you are sure in your English translation that you have the proper spelling. Just my thought.

Some people don't like to vote on challenges they enter because they don't feel they can be unbiased in their voting. I personally vote every challenge whether I'm entered or not. Its personal preference.

Hit the Quote button instead of reply. It will trigger a response that captures all of the words from that post and auto-pastes them in the top of your post.
edit: I just went to your post and hit "QUOTE" which then captured the info and let me type this at the bottom of it. Hope that helps.

Use the "quote" button. And I feel your pain in the "voting because I have no life" department :) |

I'm looking at the entire image, which is not only text, but borders, lack of, etc.
My favorites definitely HAVE text and I've voted a bit lower on ones where the text is off-setting to me, or words are misspelled. This is for a postcard, not just a pretty picture. I actually voted higher on some that I wasn't as crazy about as just a photo, but look EXACTLY like something I'd see on a rack at a tourist shop. |

So back to the topic...sorta :)
I noticed a couple of entries that were more greeting card than post card. What is your guys take on these? I don't think they meet the challenge, on the other hand these aren't terribly off topic for the challenge either. Thoughts?
(Oh yeah...Google toolbar allows you to do a spell check on any text field in a website. So there!)

The problem is that while most people think "tourist souvenir" when they think of postcards, a postcard can be any photo at all. I decided the best thing to do was to figure out what I felt the spirit of the challenge was and vote more according to that. I didn't vote those that strayed from the tourist souvenir as though they didn't meet the challenge, but looked more kindly upon those that did.

I have applied the same criteria to those as I have to 'tourist' style cards - would I buy it to send, or would I like to receive it? Even if it isn't to my taste, does it have aesthetic worth? |

Indeed. I was just going to mention that. Very handy for you grammer experts. ;)
I have mixed feelings on the text bit. Granted, this isn't a graphic design site but on the other hand, entrance isn't mandatory. Your entry is a package and if you enter a challenge, you should expect your entry to be judged. I'm not docking huge points or anything but I am considering it in my vote and also mentioning it in comments.
Edited to add: for those who aren't aware, there are tons of places on the web where you can download free front - you aren't limited to the fonts that come on your computer.

I think one thing to consider is that not everyone has Photoshop. For instance I use GIMP and adding text to an image in this app is ugly. I had finesse the text quite a bit to make it look decent. And if I didn't have GIMP? What else is free to add text to an image? MS Paint? (Ew...if someone had to resort to that I would have give "Pity Points")

Well, this turned into a fun thread.
Vote for text!
Don't vote for text!
Postcards should be a souvenir!
Postcards don't have to be a souvenir!
Pretty photo.
Ok photo with all around good presentation.
Yatta, yatta, yatta.
Everyone forgot to mention portrait vs landscape orientation. :D
Vote 'em how you see 'em folks, and enjoy the view along the way as there are some pretty amazing entries to look at.
In the FWIW column. I think NOT taking advantage of any extra rules is kind of silly (i.e. - read that to say, you probably should have added text IMO). Similar in concept for when extra rules on image sizing are in place and you can submit 720 instead of 640.
Ok. I'm off the soapbox now. :D |

OK, I've rethought my voting......All good postcards are portrait orientation, over saturated colors, HUGE text and tripple borders. Everyone else gets a 1. :)

Photoshop and photo manipulation programes in general handle text so poorly that I did my texst in InDesign. The problem is, I'm an old Quark guy and I've never used InDesign. I couldn't figure out how to do what I wanted, but I did better than using Photoshop.
I the text is really bad, and there are a few, I am counting a little off. Just as I am if the text is way overdone.
If you can't handle the text in the image area, border text is a good idea and looks very "postcard"
Some really good images in this challenge, although sunsets are getting a bit tiresome, IMO.

Illustrator is fabulous for working with text and yeah I love Quark as well but for a single page like a postcard Illustrator is best IMHO. |

Yeah. Basically I felt when I was voting on another challenge that I was tending to be overly critical of other entries sometimes when I had an entry in the same challenge. Since then I've just avoided the possibility of being biased by not voting when I have an entry. Unless it's a really varied challenge like a free study. Maybe I will vote on postcards, who knows? |
