Lucky me... I have 2 new grandchildren living nearby. Ashton (boy) is 1 month and Aria (girl)is 2 weeks old. We're all getting together at the weekend and I want to photograph these 2 together. Any ideas for something a little creative?

One of my best friends just had a baby - I took some inspiration from Anne Geddes' latest book and wound up with this:
Baby Photo
I used soft focus and she was two weeks old in this picture. She mostly sleeps, so I tried to take advantage of that!
Congrats on the grandchildren and best of luck with your photos! |

Getting in close, really is a great tip. Black and white is nice also. Here's a shot I took of my daughter, she was just days old, lying on her changing table after being fed. I used a diffusion filter to soften things up a bit, this tends to be a widely used technique with baby photos.

sleeping babies are a whole lot easier to photograph than crying ones. Also, lying them on a sheet or other solid background and taking pictures while looking down on them seems to work sometimes.

I've taken lots of pictures of my own children. Take a look at this one where he was 8 months old. He was sitting on a table in front of a window.
And this one I specially like a lot, although its just his feet.

I'm not usually one for baby pics but I am pleased with these two candids I managed to get of my Niece at a meal on Saturday.
I owe DPC a lot for making my snapshots look so good : )

My sister and I played around with my niece a bit before I really got into photography. Though the photo quality is really poor, some of the pics are my family's favorites of my niece @ that age. Here are some examples. The first is my personal favorite...something about the curve of her neck/back gets me.
Tips...get em nekkid and use little props (maybe not the froofy stuff my sister picked) for them to grasp and play with and more importantly...to hide their privates. Try not to get just the typical looking down @ the baby shots. Capture those tiny fingers and toes...helps to have familiar objects next to them for scaling. Get all of their expressions...smiles, coos, pouts, and cries. Another of our favs is of my niece sitting upright on my husbands lap...with his hand in the frame supporting her...shows how tiny she was. Try to avoid use of flash. Oh...and do a better job than I did :oP
Congrats on the new grandkids! Have fun and be sure to show us the photos! |

anyone else with good baby portrait sudjestions. I am going to photograph a baby on saturday...
I am not really that keen on baby pictures.. they are generally pretty painful (lame, sappy, poorly done) to look at.... i think mostly because the photog. or viewer is distracted by the cuteness of teh baby and don't think about how boring the photo REALLY is... if it is a photo of a coin... it has to be pretty great in order to attract any attention.
I really liked the anne geddes link... despite my not wanting to click on the link... for fear of being filled with sap.. i really liked some of her images.. they were really great... not sappy at all.. very creativly and artistcly done.

OK, I'm not going to be mistaken for Edward Weston anytime soon, but check out this link:
My Granddaughters
It contains pictures from 1-20 months old (taken by my wife, my daughter, my son-in-law, and myself). My favorites mostly are ones that my wife or daughter imagined and set up before tripping the shutter. Kinda like an Art Director, I guess.
Borrow the ideas you like, and take lots of candids.

I'd suggest heading to the bookstore and getting the book How to Photograph Your Baby. I saw it at Barnes & Noble (along with Nick Kelsh's other similary-themed books, like How To Photograph Your Family and How To Photograph Your Life) and was impressed. On one side of the page, he shows a typical "snapshot". Then he lists a bunch of tips on how to avoid the "snapshot look" and shows how he would photograph the same situation. Big difference.
He shot the whole book with a point-and-shoot digicam just to show that you don't need big fancy cameras to get good pictures. |

He also has a book called "Naked Babies" which has wonderful photos in it. |
