As you might have noticed from my portfolio and some challenge entries - I quite like using long exposure times. At the moment I haven't gone much over 5 minutes because of limitations of the D70 - and the new D80 seems to be worse according to some reviewsThom Hogans D80 review (about halfway down) with quite a lot of amp noise (purple blooming in the corners)
I'm looking at the market for a new camera - and I don't have enough of an investment in Nikon gear yet to need to stick with the D200 or D2x (I wish...)
All other things being equal - what is the best digital camera on the market for long exposure work?

Call me biased, but you really want to go for something with a bigger sensor, the 5D is a pretty competitively priced camera that will allow you to take long exposures whilst keeping down the noise. Or you could always look a software solution such as neatimage or noise-ninja.

It's not really the random noise that I'm worried about - it's the big purple sploches that appear in the corners at anything longer than 30 seconds on the D70 and the D80. This is a pic from the review of the D80 at bythom.com from a 15 minute exposure. Is this sort of thing seen in all digital cameras"

Have you tried it with your own camera? Seems like that is the one camera I'd be interested in finding out about if I wer eyou. |

I assume that's pointed at me - yes I have tried it with similar results on the D70 but not quite as bad as the D80. I posted that pic because it demonstrates the problem I'm talking about quite well and I'm at work and don't have access to my files at home at the moment.
I would love to see the results of 15 minute lens cap exposures from other cameras - any takers?
