Hi all. My search for a versatile, all-in-one walk around lens has led me to two pieces of glass: Tamron SP AF24-135MM F/3.5-5.6 AD Aspherical (IF) Macro & the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM.

I've found nothing but rave reviews on the Tamron and mixed reviews on the Canon, however I'm interested in your input. I was originally leaning towards the Canon, but I've read complaints about its sharpness and color quality. I like the IS function, but don't shoot much night or very low light situations so I don't know if the benefits of IS are worth the extra price for me.

Like I said these will be used as a walk around lens (for travel purposes primarily) and thus won't spend much time on a tripod. Any experiences with either lens, or recommendations are greatly appreciated! Also, I'm currently using a Rebel XT with the kit lens. Thanks in advance!

My main complaint with the Canon was that f3.5-5.6 is pretty slow, especially at the long end. It not only gives a slow shutter speed, it makes the finder dark. I would not expect any different from the Tamron.

The Canon's IS works, but it won't stop a moving subject. It also wasn't the sharpest lens around.

I wound up selling my Canon 28-135 IS out of frustration and buying the Tamron 28-75 f2.8, I haven't regretted it one bit.

I bought the Tamron 24-135 after reading reviews on other sites. Its an excellent lens...bright, clear, sharp, and excellent build quality. Images are razor sharp. I took several shots of an old weathered barn with the Tamron and my Canon 17-40L and in my opinion the Tamron was just about as sharp as the Canon lens. The below thumbnail is of an image taken with the Tamron. I use this lens as my walkaround lens, its that good. I don't think that you can go wrong with it.

Love my Tammy. It's the only lens I have that will focus with the lights off... Well, not really, but it is a great lens.

I know that's not very subjective, but I like it. I can't compare it, though, and I would say the IS on the Canon should be worth something, too.
