Hi,
I have a doubt regarding the legality of using a GIMP filter (actually, its a "script-fu"). The "Old photo" filter doesn't add or remove anything to the image, simply applies a series of "normal" filters: gaussian blur, colour levels, etc. It does add a faded out border as the final step. I am convinced that if it weren't for this last step, it would be completely legal...
So could anyone shed some light? I really like the effect... thanks in advance.

Under Advanced, there should be no problem with the Script, evenn the faded border.

If the border is clearly recognizable as such, then it's probably ok. If you'd like a definite ruling, could you either upload before and after shots to your portfolio or submit them via the Contact page?

Thanks for the quick answers!
Terry, I'm really not sure if I should/could upload this as I'm hoping to use it in an upcoming challenge. Would this be ok? I really like to play by the rules. :)
So I uploaded only a small part of the "after" image (a corner with the border so it should be easy to judge).
Here's the link...

Thank you very much!

You can always upload to your workshop folder which is private. As long as you only give the URLs to the SC nobody else will see it.

I'm just one SC member, but the border looks OK to me. I can't speak to the filter as a whole, though.
If you want a more conclusive ruling, you can go to the Contact page (Help/Contact) and upload your image there. Only Site Council will be able to see it.
Also, that border looks pretty distinctive, so you might want to remove that from your portfolio, just so you don't get dinged in voting.

Just for anyone that might be interested, a Script-fu is pretty much the Gimp Equivalent to Photoshop Actions. Although it's a bit more powerful than Actions.

if you think the border is the only illegal thing, then you could just do the whole thing, then go back one step when its done. This would porbably just cancel the border ... maybe ?

Maybe... depending on how the script is written, GIMP may or maynot undo the whole script.

Thank you all for your input.
Actually, I can't undo the changes the script makes to the pic. I could crop a bit closer, bypassing the border, but the point is, I really really like the "feel" the border lends to the pic.
As a sidenote, I already removed it from my portfolio.
I think it is legal... I will risk it!!! (* insane laugh *) |
