OK, I know that the general good manners on this forum is to NOT talk about our current picture, but I am increasingly frustrated by people who obviously do not take the time to study a photo in the way art is supposed to be studied and then comment on it saying "Ummmm, isn't that a mirror". I have recieved 30 comments thus far on my photo and the majority is by people who took time to study the photo (and the all too obvious title) and realise what they are seeing is NOT a mirror, unfortunately some people think the title is just for show and not there to encourage the viewer to look a little bit deeper into the work and see what the artist/photographer was thinking at the time.. I never thought I would lose points on having the subject matter TOO perfect.. Technically the photo isn't the best in the world, but the creativity and the extra time spent sure shine through or at least I think so (and the majority of people who posted comments noticed this). An example is one of J Seltzers photos, "Quittin' Time", on its own it is a brilliant, photo but the fact it is on 5 o'clock would be lost on people most of the time.. A fitting title and then everything clicks into place, "Ah yes, five o'clock, quittin time, very clever". So you see, a title isn't there just for the sake of it, most of the time it can be the difference between an average photo and a work of art, and in my case its there as a pointer to HOW the photo was achieved..
Rant over, I'll get back in my pram now....
PS.. Next weeks picture is going to be called, PILE OF RUBBISH IN A CAR PARK... Just in case none of you get it.. (Only Joking) |

Deep in the previous posts is a suggestion that everyone's title be that of the challenge, repeated verbatim. Not what I'd prefer, but might be an interesting experiment... |

You can have an administer put a note on your photo saying that a mirror was not used. The voters seem to believe the administrators. All you have to do is provide information on how it was done, I think, and they are more than happy to do that for you. All you have to do is write them. Good luck. Don't get discouraged. ~Heather~

I once suggested that we have a challenge where the title is mandated i.e. "your image must be titled "??????" and that is the full extent of the challaenge - didn't get one response - ho hum :-)

The administrators have put a note on it, but some people still can't see it...

To request a DQ on one's own photo you'd have to be able to vote on it...The most direct approach is to send an email via the "CONTACT" link under the "Help" menu.

This is the first time I have entered. I haven't had the same problem as you but I am happy with my photo. I appreciate comments that praise my photo or on ways to improve it. This is a subjective medium. If you're happy wih your photo that should be good enough. You're not always going to please everyone. Don't get frustrated. |

I know, I was just a little upset last night when I posted that.. My initial votes started at 4.1 when I checked on Monday, climbing up to 5.6and now dropping back down to 5.2, this tells me some people loved the picture and some hated it, so I guess you could say "one mans meat is another mans poison.".. I am looking forward to seeing the spread of my votes this coming Monday..

Oh what a simple world you live in, if it were only that easy for the rest of us. I had the same frustration in my first challenge. It took me great pain just to learn what I have about the audience.

Heck, you have 30 comments? Don't look a gift horse in the mouth (or something like that). Seriously, I know how frustrating it is to get the same comment over and over again, but it's usually something I expect. Not that it makes it any easier of course. I'll just shut up now. As for spending time studying the photos... I, for one, do not have time to spend all that long on each shot. I either vote on only a small percentage, giving each enough time for study, or I do the best I can and make it through. It's always gonna be a trade off - esp now that we have so many to vote on. If I have a question about a pic, however, I will usually address it in the comment and sign my name so the photographer can contact me with an explanation if they want. |

When I comment on a photo, and I've graded it down, I try to give my reasons for the lower score and I also try to find something positive to say about the effort. I feel that if I am going to criticize the effort, the photographer deserves to at least know why, and what things in the photo worked and should be built upon. Just saying, "this picture sucks" doesn't do anything towards helping a person to improve their skills. At the same time if you don't want you photo judged by the general public some of whom are not at all educated in the technical aspects of photography and/or art, you are in exactly the wrong place.
