Short version:
I usually buy PC Mag at store.
Subscription tag falls out of my issue.
I say..."oh...this is a deal...a lot less than retail price at store"
Card says "send no money now, we'll bill you later"
I send in card.
About a month later I get an invoice saying, "we hope you are enjoying your first issue of PC Photo. Please submit payment by..."
Since I didn't receive an issue, I emailed to inquire....No response.
No magazines come.
Got another invoice saying past due. Still no magazine.
Another invoice comes...no magazine...I ignore.
Letter comes yesterday from a collection agency in New York saying pretty much "Pay bill NOW ! You were referred to us from PC Photo".
"If you feel that this payment is not due and collection is unwarranted, you have 30 days to respond or we'll assume you owe the funds"....(I don't have the letter with me but that's just about what it said)
I can't wait to write my letter! My credit score is sky high and these jokers are trying to strong arm me for $11 for a subscription I haven't even started to receive !!
Har harr harr dee harr harr.

I'm sure it will all work out in the end but isn't that rediculous?!!
On top of that, I really do like the mag but will NOT purchase it for a lOOOOOoggggg while - if ever.

Good luck with your endeavor, that sucks. I get my subscriptions online and avoid hassles. One place, Best Deal Magazines has Outdoor Photographer and Popular Photography for $4.69, and American Photo for $5.95. No deals on PC Photo though. |

I had the same problem with Outdoor Photography, I signed up for the 4 free issues and then got a letter about six months later from a collection agancy for 12 dollars. I never recieved one issue and never said I wanted a full subscription. I haven't bought that mag since.

I think a lot of these magazines have outside people print, ship, and bill. There always seems to be a huge disconnect between billing and receiving magazines.
But this situation is ridiculous and a call to their customer service should resolve it.

I'd probably do my best to clear it up if you'd like to keep that perfect credit history.
Back around 1990, I had a beef with Montgomery Wards after I had them "fix" an amplifier of mine. I don't even remember what they wanted to charge me, but when I got it back home, the amp still turned itself off after 5 minutes of use, just like it did when I took it in for repairs.
After much hemming and hawing, they told me they'd take the repair charge off my credit card. Well, in reality, they eventually sent me a refund check, and I had ignored the charge when I got the bill for the credit card, figuring they took it off after the statement went out.
So to this day, when we apply for credit this stupid incident is the ONLY black mark that shows up on our credit history report.
I actually had to provide a written statement about this thing when we applied for a mortgage!

write a letter to all three credit reporting agencies explaining the situation, and that is was resolved eons ago, and it will likely disappear from your credit history.
i had to this for a couple things when we applied for our mortgage.
