I found it very interesting that the top 3 winners in the just ended portrait in landscape competition all cropped the top of the heads. Additionally I found it interesting that the top 2 chose to center the subject even though they had room in the landscape format.

I found it interesting that the top two look more like fashion shots than portraits.

5 out of the top 10 chose to crop the top of the heads. 4 out of the top 10 are pretty much centered.

Now why? Because it works. With a centered landscape portrait, it lokks less snapshotish and intentional if you also broke the head cropping rule.

With this sort of challenge, you do well to play by the rules are bust the hell out of them :-)

In the portrait world it is perfectly ok to crop the top of the head or even the forehead, but a huge no-no to crop the chin. The chin helps to define the overall face shape, it would be like cropping the eyes.

This is a popular style in portraits among professional photographers right now. It could be a fad that will go away when the next new style comes along.

I believe it became really popular when that LA photographer, whose name I can't remember, started taking portfolio still shots in that style in the doorway of his garage for up and coming movie and TV stars. Because of his stills they started getting more attention and more jobs.

If there is more than one chin, is it permissible to crop the lower one(s)?? ;-)

Generous use of the Liquify tool is advised. ;)

Only 20 of the top 150 have more than waist and up shots
