Oh yes, this is going to be good. with all the great B&W shots i've seen on this, and it being advanced editing, this should be an amazing challenge.

Yay! Finally a good opportunity to cross off that last piece on the list for the things I need to do in 2006, to ribbon in a black and white challenge :) Think I need to score about a 7.5 for that to happen though, just got my 7th 7+ score that didnÂ´t ribbon :(

Here's a question....
In the new rules it says "you may use any feature of your camera when photographing your entry"
Does this include the B/W effect or is this a study in conversion only?
I'm thinking that I probably can't use it, but it DOES say ANY feature...

Both would be OK.

I hope so because I've already started shooting in b/w mode. I know 100% I won't need this one in color . And it's nice to see the instant b/w preview 8)

That is perfectly fine, in either advanced or basic! The point of the challenge isn't really to demonstrate how well you can convert a photo to B&W... it's to show your best B&W photo :)

I think I've got some good ideas...Can't wait to take some shots tomorrow.
Does anyone else dream about dpc and ideas for challenges or am I just crazy??

Most of the time I see better shots or think of better ideas AFTER the challenge is either in voting or completely over. And so far my best shots aren't when I execute an idea but when I just go take photos and then find one I like out of them that fits the challenge. When I plan and shoot or when I try to edit anything more than basic, then my scores suffer.

I guess I'm just a go do it gal and think about it later.

This one is me......I don't ever seem to be able to go out and shoot for a challenge.

Is there an advantage to shooting with your camera in B&W-mode over shooting in colour and then simply Desaturating in Photoshop?

I don't have any special skills (unlike my numchuck skills) in converting to B&W in any special ways in Photoshop, other than sliding the Saturation in Hue-Sat over to zero, or clicking on "Convert to Greyscale." I'm wondering if shooting in B&W mode will capture a better range or something?
