I recently purchased two small flash heads for a home studio setup. I have a Canon 10D. I got everything set up today in order to experiment.

The flash heads are set as slaves using photo cells. I put my 420EX flash on the 10D and pointed it straight up in order to trigger the two flash heads. I have vaulted ceilings so the 420 won't interfere. I set my camera to Manual and the shutter to 1/60. I first set the apeture to 4.0. I took the pic. The 420 and the two flash heads went off, but the pic was very dark. I varied the apeture up and down (from 4.0 to 22), but the pic was almost exactly the same everytime. I turned the flash heads off and took the pic at 1/60, 4.0. With the flash heads off, the pic was much brighter and closer to the right exposure! So what is going on here?

Preflash of the 420 ex is firing the strobes before the shutter even opens.

That's my guess too.

You guys were right. I hooked the synch cable directly to camera and the flash went off at the right time. Guess I cant use the units with the 420

Well, it's better that way. Although you have high cielings, you could get some spill here and there you don't want.

No, you just have to take the 420 off of TTL flash and use it on manual. Useful for if you want to put a reflector behind your head for some fill flash, otherwise use it on 1/128th and point it at the ceiling.

Ahhh, if only it were so easy.

The 420EX does not have a manual setting on the flash.

Some cameras give manual control over the 420, but the 10D is not one of them.

I discovered this soon after buying my 10D. At the time, I was using a G5 and the G5 gave me manual control over the 420, yet when I upgraded to the 10D, that feature was missing.
