Been puzzled at the performance of my wind challenge shot as I watched it fall all week long. Dog's hair blowing in the wind, sniffing the wind, thought it was pretty good technically....

Average vote of commenters: 7.9

20 votes 3 and under.

I'm not crying over it, but I'm just boggled. If you lowballed it, feel free to clue me in. Animal shot hatred or something?

It's a little on the dark side and flat for my taste; I'd like it better of the dog stood out more from the background. I didn't vote on it, but I'd probably have given it a 6 or maybe a 7.

Looks to me like you caught the dog in mid action then something that says "Wind".

Did not vote . Probably would've given a "6" for a decent picture.

Well, glad you didn't vote then I guess. Was the windiest day we've had in a long time. Took the dog out knowing she'd be sniffing like crazy, blasted 50 odd shots until I got the right pose with the right DoF.

GeneralE - got another comment about it being flat. Not sure I understand.

I did a little experiment. The flatness I see seems to be due to muted colours. Here's a quick adjustment (may or may not be better, just something to try)

Left a comment. Hope it doesn't come off "mean" or anything. As far as the challenge is concerned, I just don't see any evidence of wind in the image. The blur that I do see could simply be the shallow DOF (which I like a *lot* in this image) or stopped motion. It just doesn't look like a "windy picture".

So... outside of the challenge, I'd say this is a really nice picture. Well lit. Excellent sharpness where it counts. Pleasing DOF and colors. But for the challenge, I couldn't vote it above a 5 or 6.

Left you a comment. I didn't vote for this image, but I would have given it a 4, sorry. More in the comment.

I was looking for more contrast, both within the subject, and especially something to separate the dog from the background. The following quick adjustments involve an RGB Curve, and then (for the grayscale) Channel Mixer over that in monochrome, with a slight bump to the Red channel there.

One of the other "problems" (alluded-to by dwterry is that the main "evidence" of the strength of the wind is the way the dog's whiskers are bent back; probably too subtle for the typical 5-10 second evaluation most voters give a photo. The fur near the background is almost certainly windblown, but it's almost impossible to tell if it's that, or just fuzzy from being out of the focal plane.

With RGB Curve adjustment: With RGB Curve and Channel Mixer/monochrome:

Your b&w conversion is contrasty, but it emphasizes the blown highlight around the nose.

You're right, though if it had been my actual entry I'd have almost certainly done some masking to take take of that, and to further separate the dog from the BG. These were just intended to be quick examples to show the idea of what I was talking about, not "final" versions, expecially since I wasn't starting with the original.

I didn't vote but if I did I wouldn't have deducted anything for DNMC. It's not a strong connection to the theme but a connection nonetheless. Just looking at the dog's fur should indicate to anyone that there is breeze present. I suppose the dog COULD have been moving to cause that effect but who am I to suggest the photographer is lying? Call me gullible but the shot looks like there is wind in the shot so mission accomplish in that regard.

Btw, no offense to the re-edits but I like the the entry version better. Anyway, just my take.

I think the picture is terrific. One of the best pet portraits I have seen. I think it also looks great as you submitted it, no further post is neccessary. However, I gave it a 4 in the challenge because I did not feel it met the essence of the challenge. If it were Free Study, then a 7/8.

Great photo of the pooch, but it doesn't portray "wind" to me.

Remember, the camera, often times, is unable to convey what your senses may have been experiencing during the shoot (e.g. wind in your face, a dog sniffing a scent in the air, cool crisp air, etc.)

Yeah, I think most of the people have hit the nail on the head, definitely flat and can be bumped with curves.

Also, I think the DoF is just a tiny bit too shallow for this shot.

Had I have voted, I'd have given it a 5, which is where my pointer stays on a run through. It's not a bad shot, but doesn't come at me as more than just an average shot.

Anyway, what do I know, I got slaughtered in that challenge ... LOL
