I've got a gig where I'm going to be the photographer for a christmas party. It is both indoors and outdoors but the constant is there will be either poor light or patio lights outdoors. My question is whether to use this as an excuse to get a new lens as I already have my 18-70 kit lens and a 50mm f1.8. I use an SB600 flash that should give me the light I need. Is there reasonably priced lens that may serve as more of an all round solution for indoor and low light event venues?

As far as I'm concerned you have all you will need in both of those lenses and the flash. If you really want a new lens, go for either a VR lens, say the 24-120 or go with the 85mm 1.8 if you need the extra speed and focal length.

i did an indoor party recently where i used my new sigma 30mm 1.4 and loved it. i did a few shots with the 18-70mm (mostly w/flash), but consistantly liked the outcome with the 30mm better...
it will be on one of the bodies tonight at the wedding i'm shooting, so we'll see how it is for that...

good to hear you liked the 30mm. I'm looking into one of those. I'm interested if you have any other feedback.
Yeah, i would either go with a faster lens or use this as an excuse to get an SB800. |
