I have read this entire post over a couple days and have decided to give Alamy a try. I have been with photographers direct for about a year with no sales to date. I have 169 images to date with them.
After reading their requirements I looked over my process and found out my camera was adding sharpening, photoshop was adding sharpening automatically in the raw process, as well as adding a sharpening at the end of my resize for PD as they directed. So basically none of my past images are useable with Alamy. Now I have to learn to upsize which is against every other stock site directions. LOL I feel like Im starting over.

Well, I became an Alamy contributor about a year ago, and I submitted 29 images within' the first 3 or 4 weeks after I became accepted, and haven't submitted ANY images since. I became very lazy, plus I have college and school work, etc.
But yesterday, I decided to check my account because I was bored, and I discovered I sold an image, a whole year later, with only 29 images online so far. :)
It's probably the most simple image I've ever taken, so I'm happy with the sale. Most of the images I have up right now are amateurish, at best.
Knife on cutting board
For those just starting out, and curious of the details, the image sold for $225 for use in a US "food and drink" magazine, spot sized, print run of 1 million, from December 2006 until January 2007.
And yeah, I'm more motivated and I'm dying to send in more images. |

I'm curious to know how many images have been sold so far by the people who have very high volumes on Alamy, (Grant Farquhar, Jodie Coston, etc), if you don't mind. |

I have sold approx 13 images on Alamy. It's not a large number due to the type of images I have got on Alamy (travel), which is a major factor in whole scheme of things. The gross total of these 13 sales has come to US$1800. I really need to add some more onto Alamy but currently busy editing my latest wedding shoot...

I am just curious how do you guys generate an 15 megapixel image (that's available on Alamy) with a 6 or 8Mp cameras? |

Use software called Genuine Fractals - it's amazing how it can add resolution without the artifacts.

I use PhotoZoom Pro. I have virtually unlimited enlargeability with PhotoZoom's S-Spline algorithm in terms of jagged edges; there will never be any. Ever.
But of course, the larger you go, the less detailed the image becomes, but things stay nice and smooth. It's really my favorite program for interpolation. |

I remember asking that same question. You can upsize your photos in CS2 under Image Size.

I just shipped off a dvd of 240 images. :)
My original 10 went up for sale on Oct. 5th but I haven't sold anything yet, but I didn't expect to sell anything this soon. I figure the more I submit, the greater the chance I'll sell.

Their instructions are confusing me. They want a minimum 16MB file? Finished in jpeg? I have a 6000+ x 4000+ pixel image (through RAW-the camera default is 3000+ x 2000+) that (when in psd) is 145MB. When it is converted to jpeg it comes out as 10.6MB (opened in PS it is 75.1MB). Getting a 16MB jpeg file will require the file to be 8000+ pixels wide. Is this what they are talking about?

They've always wanted the native, uncompressed size to be to be 48MB, or (very) approximately 4750 x 3550 pixels, or about 15.8 x 11.8 inches at 300 dpi (in RGB mode).
A 6MP image upsampled to about 168% of the original size will get you there. The size in JPEG is pretty irrelevant, as long as you use the highest quality setting (supposedly lossless compression in current versions of Photoshop); a 10-15MB result sounds about right. |

The upload system is NOT up and running yet. They are still working some bugs out of it at this point. I was invited to test it back at the end of August. I was notified later in Sept. that it wasn't going to happen yet, and please stand by. They would notify me by email when they were ready to go. It has something to do with the large numbers of individuals that would be submitting at the same time. In addition, they are going to keep the CD/DVD submission process because there are a number of contributors that do not have high speed internet available to them for online upload.
Cheers

Hi, well after some deliberation I am going to submit to Alamy and with a bit of luck be accepted! I was also windering how you submit images to Getty? What other 1st rate Stock Libries axist out there? My limited searching tells me the main players are Corbis, Alamy & Getty. Are there any others? What sales reatio do these achieve?
Cheers,

well you could always check out the micros... although perhaps you are anti micro.
I think the earning potential is pretty similar between micro and macro sites actually, despite the low payment per images on the micro sites.

It has been a year and a half since the original post for this thread. Since then it has taken on a life of it's own, way beyond the scope of mavrik's inital idea. His dpc account isn't even active anymore. I have waded through the first few pages but don't find an any answers to the original question... does anyone know what mavrik concluded?

Most DPC'ers who are on SS and Istock (like me) feel like we a) can't get into Alamy or b) won't sell pictures anyways. I am setting out to prove this claim for myself one way or other.
