Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, they say: so try to imitate your favourite artist or photgrapher.

Decent - but don't people do this to Setz every week?

I like the idea in theory - but we've seen a trillion waterdrops, 100s of refracted light shots, and lots of other JMS ripoffs. I'm all for this...I just want people to branch out! :)
(My glass shot was my take on Jacko's Wine From Above).

How about homage to sports stars, movie stars, other artists...
Doesn't have to be a photographer on this site.

CUT!
That's a wrap!
I like that one. Just plain old homage.

Some folks around here have become tired of seeing pets and flowers: maybe an homage challenge would accomplish this!

That was partially my thought David. It would also be a more technical challenge (though I realise there woud be a swarm of Liberty and Justice clones - perhaps).
I was actually thinking of more world-famous photographers. try and take a Man Ray shot, try and do Kertesz, Cameron, Herbert Sutcliffe ...
Or Rembrandt, or Monet ... but in photgraphic terms, rather than photoshop terms.

Isn't the matrix challenge something like a homage?

We did seem to get a lot of Georgia O'Keefe pastiches in Complementary Colors. :-> |

At my local evening class we were given a project like this - well sort of...
The project is to create 6 images (BW since that's what the course is in) inspired by the work shown in a photographic exhibition we choose and visit.
The exhibition has to be a "known" one - ie in a recognised museum or gallery, documented in trade press etc - I think this is just so that we try and learn about some highly regarded photographers.
I've done a series of portraits based on the work of Seydou Keita - showing currently at the National Portrait Gallery (London) in a joint exhibition with fellow Mali photographer, Malick Sidibe. I believe both are now deceased.
What fascinated me about his work was the way that the incredible mix of patterned fabrics and surfaces - cloth backdrops and floor coverings, checkerboard floors and the detailed fabrics worn by his subjects - didn't detract from the subjects themselves.
One would think that amongst all the busy pattern, that the people themselves would be lost - but the focus of each image is undeniably the subject(s).
My neighbours modelled for some, and my husband for the others.
We all had great fun and I'm delighted with the results.
Once the course is complete I'll scan some of my work in to share with anyone interested.

I particularly like the idea of trying to take photos to imitate a *painter's* style, or sculptor's. Opening it to photographers as well would encourage a lot of pastiches of people's work from DPC, which, while not necessarily a problem, seems kind of incestuous. :-> Also, it'd be a bit more of a challenge to try to photograph like Monet or Van Gogh or (ooh!) Jackson Pollack than, say, Ansel Adams. |

This could be so cool if people take the time to look at some fine art. I have a few favorite artists but the one I like the most when it comes to what I like to photograph is April Gornick. I can already see me heading for the mountians and taking some landscape photos of the Alleghney Mountains for this type of a challenge.
