I've finished a lengthy research and experimentation phase in the use of adding a spotting scope to my digital camera. Anybody interested?

Here are a couple of example web sites:

Plus my DeviantArt gallery, where I've shown both some good examples and some of my "learning" experiments.

heya.. i've been very intested in digiscoping ever since i saw a f717 attached to a celestron 80mm .. i've even contacted a somewhat local dealer to ask for a price.. how much was the C5? i know the 80mm isn't expensive at all, though i'll have an answer sometime this afternoon as to the real price... you got some amazing pics there, the detail is great.. cant wait to jump in on this :)

Refracted, I started with a Walter's 8x (cheap) spotting scope. You can tell those shots at DeviantArt by the extreme brightness aborations and general fuzziness (not a presice instrument). I am now using a Celestron C-5 with the 32mm eyepiece (as it mates to my camera best, but is the lowest res. eyepiece in my kit). The C-5 runs about $1149 MSRP (american), but can be found on sale. I bought mine in person, with my camera and adapter in hand, to test on site prior to spending that kind of money. Not all h/w mates up. I get a range of viginetting between horrible to acceptable, depending on the lighting, F-stop setting and ISO that I use.

yeah, ok, thats a bit more than i'd want to spend on a scope for now :P.. i'm still waiting for jab to post his f707 pics with his celestron 80mm :) so far i've only seen D60 pics with it, though they look great.. do you know of any other less expensive, but stilll decent quality scopes i could be looking at? oh, and i beleive the 80mm requires a 1.25 inch eyepiece.. i forget what the name of it was.. those aren't too expensive i hope? :)

Yes, Celestron sells eyepieces as separate items. They usually run about $100 each or so, but with luck you can get a good deal. I did.

Before you buy anything, I strongly recommend testing it with your camera. You can do a quick and dirty test just by putting your camera up almost touching the lens of a mounted (and focused) spotting scope. If you don't see a good image....don't go there.

well, i've already seen pics taken with the celestron 80mm scope with the f717,, which is exactly what i want to do, so i'm not very worried about it being compatible or not.. too bad the closest dealer of them is about a 13 hour drive.. i'll *try* to look local shops.. but this area isn't really big on specialty items :P who knows though, i might find a decent second hand something..

I too have been lookng at mating the camera to a small telescope, and I'm currently negotiating on a used C5. As part of this exercise, I looked at new C5s and it appears they are going at about $599 US from online resellers. The C5 seems to be about the perfect scope for this, since it's a relatively fast f6, compared to the more common f10 optics found on astronomical scopes.
I'm hoping to snag the one I located locally, or I'll have to put that project off, yet again... would have been nice to have for the eclipse!

It would have been nice if the clouds had cleared away!

Kirbic - you have THE camera preferred by digiscopers! You should have NO problems whatsoever, technically. Many scopes mate up well with that model, with little or no viginetting. At no zoom, I loose about half my picture to viginetting. (Good thing I always crop....)
