I've been getting hammered (score-wise) for my current Free Study entry, and I really didn't know why... until I got a few negative comments over the weekend. They were bluntly honest (about why they think my entry sucks) but they have been very helpful because now I understand why my entry wasn't doing as well as I had expected (who wouldn't expect a good score?). I'm posting this because I wish to point out that negative comments can be useful too. In my case, it clarified what I did wrong to my entry. So don't keep the negative comments to yourself!

My Free Study entry is getting hammered too and I only have 4 comments. And out of those 4, only 1 mentions something that gives a little insight as to why at least that person might have voted somewhat low. I really wish I had more negative comments to let me know why it is not getting a decent reception. I think it is a good shot. Not Ribbon worthy I guess, but at least a mid 5 I'd think. I'm sitting at a 4.8 right now.

Tried doing that with Wind II and it rubbed a couple of people up the wrong way. Didn't know which entry was theirs, so went back and removed any comments I had made that may have been negative/blunt (note: I didn't change my votes though). Won't be doing that again. You'll only get sweetness and light from me in future :)

I for one would strongly urge you not change your commenting style.

If individuals make rude or offensive comments, you can always report them to the SC. You must also take into consideration the fact that if they don't like your views... too bad for them.

You leave great comments - don't change that. And I'm sure a lot of the folks who did have comments that you removed probably appreciated them.

Couldn't agree more. I really need to up the harshness of my comments because I never get those nasty PMs.

Thanks for that :) I thought long and hard about it before removing, but I just so don't want to make waves here. Particularly as I'm not even sure what I'm talking about half the time, so I could actually be embarrassing myself! Maybe later on down the track when I build up a little more photography cred :)

I think you and others should still make those negative comments. I have had some comments that i think were inappropriate such as something to the effect of "a turd?" and a couple complaining about how tired the are of my type of shot or subject but for the most part the negative ones are where we learn so the ones that piss you off are worth the ones that help you.

Completely agree with you and the OP. I value the neg comments on my images too and wish I could gain a better understanding of why my images get the scores they do. But boy-oh-boy... there's some folk who just can't take it.

You'll never feel comfortable swimming if you don't get used to being in the water ;-)

Besides, I paid just as much money to hear your opinion as anyone else's!

Well, I have my first two entries in the voting process right now, and I would really appreciate some comments to let me know why I suck so bad. (Between the two of them I think I have about a 5.)

As for leaving negative comments. . . I'm not sure that someone with my minimal experience (and sheer crapitude [is that a word? and can I say it in here?]) should be telling others what they are doing wrong until I figure out how to do things right myself. :)

In other words, I think that I would appreciate the comments from those with proven track records, positive or negative.

all constructive comments can be helpful regardless of skill level. for instance someone very skilled technically could talk specifics about lighting and DOF and a better way to achieve the desired effect but someone not as skilled can make just as helpful comments about basic things like subject, emotion and general feel. Many people here would like to sell photos and in reality professional photographers will not be buying them so knowing what normal people or people just starting out think could help the photographer get something that would sell.

You have enough photography cred (as you put it) to vote, but not leave comments? That doesn't make sense. While I don't have any comments from you....judging from what was said further up this thread, you should keep commenting, whether right or wrong. Comments are YOUR opinion. You might say a sky is blown out (for example) or DOF was to shallow or not shallow enough, but the shooter meant for it to be that way....it doesn't mean you were wrong.

Added:I have yet to get a comment that didn't help. There is ONE comment that still bothers me..the commenter most likely voted according to what he/she said and that was the correct thing to do. Even though what that commenter said couldn't be right. But, it gives me MORE insight as to what voters look for.

One thing you could do is change your preferences to where your identity is hidden during the voting. At least that way no one will know it was you that said it until after the challenge is over and it's less likely that by then they will still be complaining to you for your comment.

I'd prefer negative comments and a 5 than no comments or "nice" and get a 4. My images rarely score where I believe they should score.

I don't believe in being rude in my comments, but I will point out what I think would have made the picture better even if it is a composition modification.

Yes, being rude and making a negative comment are two different thing. A person can make a negative comment without being rude (or at least, try). I think most people are put off by rude comments, and not negative comments - though everybody's interpretation of "rude" may be different, sigh...

I don't leave negative comments, but I leave criticism. I've yet to get an angry PM about it. In general, I try also to mention what I liked or what is good so that they get both sides of it, and I think it helps diffuse those who get upset.

Well...negative comments and crticism are 2 different things anyway and the person getting the comment hopefully should be able to tell the difference. But, the person leaving the comment should re-read what they type to see if it can be taken any other way than the way they intend.
