Yesterday was the one year anniversary of my cousin's suicide. Last night we had a family supper and amidst discussing how hard this year's been with my cousin dying, my aunt's father (who was like my own pop) recently passing and now her mother being sick too, she asked us to pray for her suffering to end.

This morning I was sitting with my dad when he got a frantic phone call. He rushed out to find my uncle Ted dead, hanging over his toilet after having a heart attack last night..he was alone, his wife was out of town caring for her mother who is the woman I mentioned above - the one so sick that death would be a relief.

This Christmas we'll be without many beloveds and possibly more before it's all said and done. I remember just begging for 2005 to be over and now I've heard the same about 2006.

An early Christmas wish would be for everyone to be with their families. And for 2007 to see new life and old lives remembered fondly!

There really are no words to express ones sorrow in situations like this. You and all your family are in my thoughts and I would like to echo the last part of your post...

What a huge load for one family to bear but it sounds like you have a good, strong family. I'll be thinking of you and wishing you better times.

Lori,

My mother has lost 3 brothers in as many years. The first had silver hair and always played "Santa" at Christmas. He died of bone cancer. The second was a brother she had kind of lost touch of over the years because of his alcoholism. Recently (over the last 5 years) he started spending more time with his family only to die of a heart attack in his sleep 2 years ago. The most recent was my uncle who lived closest to us. He lost his wife to breast cancer and apparently was too grief stricken to move on with life. Despite the fact he had met someone new and had two wonderful grandchildren of his own, he too committed suicide 4 days before Christmas of last year (on my wife's birthday). Shortly after that, my grandmother (my mom's mom) fell, broke her hip, and was then diagnosed with Alzheimers. My mom has had a very difficult 4 years, but she has also welcomed a new grandchild (my son) and met a new friend (the girlfriend of my uncle who committed suicide).

Despite all of the tragic things that may happen in our lives, it is important to keep reminding ourselves that there are also wonderful things all around us. Moments truly can be fleeting. It's what we do with those moments while we have them that really matters. I am sorry for your losses, but try not to dwell on them too much.... You could be missing out on another precious moment in the process.

Thanks Lee, I was telling my parents today (they weren't around for thanks giving this year) that I spent it with Ted and that side of our family...there was a guestbook that was started in 1964 and Ted was the first person to sign it. So he signed it this thanks giving and commented on how old he felt, but how neat to sign it 40-odd years later.

A fleeting moment that I'm glad I never missed!
