So, I've had this pain in my abdomen all day, about an inch below my belly button and 2-3 inches to the right. It's a stabbing pain that goes all the way through to my back. I remember being tested for appendicitis before where the doc pressed on the area and let up, so I did that, and it hurts more when the pressure is relieved. I hate hospitals with a passion...guess that's from working in a med school for 4 years haha.
So, do I wait it out and hope for the best or what?

have you been doing any heavy lifting lately?
sounds maybe like a hernia.. but i have no idea what im talking about
(i had a hernia operation 2 years ago)

nope - go get it checked out now ..
if you think this is painful try a burst appendix (not personal experience but worked in a hosp. for 2 yrs )

| Are you nauseus and throwing up too? I remember the first symptoms I had when I had appendecitus was I started feeling nauseus and started throwing up. I went home from work and the stabbing pain got worse and worse, and I was doubled over in severe pain. I went to emergency and they did an emergency appendectomy. It was perforated and that's when it gets bad. Do youself a favor and get yourself checked out, even if it means going to the ER. Good luck. |

Well an acute case of appendicitis usually is accompanied by other symptoms and does not always hurt on the right side. However if you are not having other symptoms that keep you in the restroom all day you may consider a case of kidney stones.
The area you indicated would be where you would hurt if a kidney stone was passing through your renal tube (lack of better word). Kidney stones can be a chronic pain and also an acute pain as described. Usually feels like pressure in the front and your in you back. Making you think you have to go to the restroom both ways but you can't. While appendicitis keeps your in the restroom most of the time and when not the pain is so great you will be rolled into a ball on the bed. And fever usually is present.
Be on the safe side; go to the ER and get checked. If appendices you don't want them to burst.

Good test on that page for you to try Mike:
"My 10 year old son has just had his appendix out after being diagnosed with acute appendicitis. The doctor did a drop test (as my son had no temperature or fever - just a slight pain and vomiting). He had to stand on tip toes and drop to his heels - this sent a sharp pain to the appendix area and confirmed appendicitis. Had I know about this test I would have acted sooner (I thought he just had a stomach upset)." |

| It's free to you and they're probably bored at the hospital on a Saturday night (heh) so go visit your local emergency room just for fun. Take your camera - never know what you can shoot while you wait! |

They thought my daughter had appendicitis about a year ago, rushed her to the hospital, she was admitted for 2 days -- turned out to be ovarian cysts.
Maybe you have ovarian cysts, Mike. ;)

So... hernia, kidney stones, really bad gas, ovarian cysts, or appendicitis.
The latter would require medical attention before Monday. The ovarian cysts will make you rich. |

No lifting has been involved, so I'm guessing no on the hernia. I woke up with the pain, didn't have it last night. I seriously doubt gas. So, I guess a trip to the ER it is :(

Hi There,
From what you described, it could also be your gall bladder. The gall bladder lies in the general area you are describing. I also had the stabbing pain. Although, there's many different symptoms that people can have with gall bladder problems.

Ohhhhhh, I take that back! That area in all probability would not be your gall bladder. Not sure why, but i thought you said 2-3 inches above your belly button.

WARNING SOME MAY FIND THIS POST DISTURBING
A former co-worker was hurting in his stomach and stayed out of work. He went a couple days hurting and then during the night the pain subsided and he felt better, so off to sleep he went. A few hours latter he woke to more extreme pain and had to call an ambulance to take him to the hospital. He could not drive himself. When the pain subsided that was his appendix bursting. He had to have emergency surgery to remove his appendix and to clean out his abdominal cavity. By that time the poison had invaded his abdominal cavity and was close to creating gangrene. They flushed his abdominal cavity basically washing the poison out before closing his abdomen. He stayed in the hospital about a week. The doctors told him he was within hours of .....well you know.
So if you are hurting beyond a 6 on a scale of 1-10, back away from the computer and have someone to take you to the hospital. It's not worth taking a chance. If it turns out to be nothing major at least you will have the peace of mind knowing that it's nothing major.

Get it checked out. This is one of those situations where living in denial could harm or kill you.
Appendicitis and/or ruputured appendix is notoriously difficult to diagnose, even the best doctors only get it right initially 60-70% of the time. But if it is, you want to be at a hospital not at home.
My ruptured appendix was initially diagnosed as probable food poisoning. But it's good they kept me in because three days later it was morphine and emergency surgery time. Spent the next two weeks in hospital recovering from appendicitis and peritonitis - but if I hadn't been at hospital, it could have been worse.

Recently, my nephew spent several days in the ICU after having pains similar to appendix problems...turned out to be a twisted small intestine. Emergency surgery corrected it. It was a pretty scary situation.

Duodenal ulcers can cause pain in this area also, not to mention ileus, small bowel obstructions and appendcitis.
Without tests, you never know.
if you have really dark, black, or tarry stools, could be ulcer.....or not.
no stools or diarrhea could mean small bowel obstruction, usuallly accompanied by lots of green bile and vomiting (getting to vomiting "stool") and pain.
ileus is "slowing of the intestines," usually no BM for awhile and pain.
appendicitis has been gone over, but it can start around the umbilicus and eventually (not always) moves to the Right lower quadrant.
woman have it even worse, with all the other extra gear they got to deal with.
