This is my brother's sweet little dog, Pabu. He was killed by a car on halloween night. I took care of him often and picked him out of a litter for my brother. he was only 6 years old...how have others coped with such a terrible loss ??? (I posted this some where else but now can't remember where- oh well) I cry at the drop of a hat.

A friend of mine was dropping me off one night. Our cat was an outdoor cat and always came when you called. I called him and he came running out of the weeds into the street right into the path of a van. Broke his back, had to put him to sleep. The best thing we did was to get another cat 2 days later from the ASPCA shelter. It will never help you forget your dog, but just like when people close to you pass away, it does get better.

Thanks, that's what I'm advising my brother to do, but he says he can't think about it yet. |

One of my two dogs died a pretty ugly death right at my feet a couple months ago. There's nothing to do to get over it. Time passes, you get past it, and it still sucks not having them around. I just think about the good times and that's about it. |

there's no way to quickly get over the loss of a loved animal... they touch our hearts in a way that no human can...and you loved them deeply....
cry... it will help...
laugh... when you remember how he was...
smile....when you remember how much he loved you in return.
your heart will stop aching one day..but it willtake time |

I would not want to be given another pet right after something like that happens. Time is the only cure. |

Heartbreak. Just takes time. No, easy way about it. Sad loss. Poor little thing. I'm sure he had a good life. |

it does really help to have people tell how they got through it. i'm a nurse - Im conditioned to people dying, but not my animals...
Thank you for your words . |

Oh, Patricia. So sorry for you and your brother. I wish I had some advice about the grieving process. All I can offer is a poem I wrote for this thread. *Hugs*
This one brought to mind the stages of grief described by Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross.
FIVE STAGES
No.
It isn̢۪t so!
I̢۪ll squeeze my eyes so tight they cry,
then open them to find
that everything I̢۪ve just been told
and all the pain that rocks my soul
was nothing but a lie.
Why?!
I curse the sky!
It isn̢۪t fair, I̢۪ve had my share
of dirty, rotten luck.
I prayed each night and sang in church.
I did my best and shunned the worst.
Oh God, you really suck!
Pleaseâ€Â¦
Beg on my knees
to turn back time, retrieve what̢۪s mine
and make this go away.
Just take the best years of my life,
order up my sacrifice,
and give back yesterday.
Pain,
It̢۪s all in vain.
The world is cruel and God is too.
I don̢۪t care anymore.
My soul is but an open gash.
All that talk of love is trash.
No one can heal this sore.
Yes.
I'm hurting less.
To think of those who suffer most,
And still they stand up tall.
I̢۪ll seek such fortitude as theirs.
Perhaps, I̢۪ll find some hope to share,
and thank my God for all.
