And to think that I used to own a TV that had no remote...... |

I'm glad you revived the tread. It is known that using the keyboard is faster than the mouse. It also reduces the chance of developing carpal tunnel syndrome from repetitive movement involved with the mouse.
Any suggestions?

Ok. It's done. You will have to use Firefox and install the 'Greasemonkey' extension. (you can get greasemonkey here: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/748/).
After you have the Greasemonkey extension installed go to this url and install the script I wrote to let you vote using your number keys:
//www.jamesleesmith.com/gm/dpc_keyboard_vote.user.js
It will ask you if you want to install...say yes.
Now to vote, when you are on the image voting page hit 0 - 9 to vote. 0 = 10. So to vote a 10 just hit the 0 key and then press enter when you are prompted 'Are you sure you want to vote 10?'. To vote 5 hit 5 and so on and so on.
After you press the number key a confirmation is shown which makes sure you don't 'accidentally' vote. Like I said just hit enter to accept the vote and automatically move to the next image.
Have fun.
Edit to change the above urls into links.

I don't mind voting either way! If it can be implemented and still be able to use the mouse as normal if you want to then everyone's happy!

mssnare's script works great for firefox users.
I commented out the confirmation and I can pretty much sit back with my legs propped up and go through all the photos voting just by pressing a single key for each one. It's fantastic.
Many times in recent months I've been unable to finish voting for the challenge. This will make it much easier. And I'll have more time, in fact, to go back and comment afterwards on the ones I choose to comment. (I usually don't vote and comment at the same time anyway.)
I think if this were implemented on a site code basis, it would be helpful to everyone. But meanwhile, thanks a bunch James (mssnare).

I think I can slap something together. It will be PC/IE only. Will try tomorrow.

That will be good for any IE users. But for firefox users like myself, mssnare's script is working great!

I don't understand; I've been voting with the numerical keypad for like a year, and haven't had to add anything to do it. Press number, press enter, next picture pops up... Firefox user...

Yeah it only works in firefox because if you have the option selected, when you start typing in firefox and your cursor is not in a text box, firefox will automatically assume you are wanting to search for what you are typing. So when you type a number in firefox, it automatically finds the voting number and selects it.

This sounds great & I definately want to try it but I think the mouse v keyboard thing is horses for courses. That is it depends on the application and the person. I can think of scenarios where I prefer one then in other cases the opposite.
One interface I think would work well would be if we could have ten numbered boxes across the top of the thumbs page and we could drag the thumbs onto the boxes which would then allocate them a score. Then you could proceed as we do now for a second pass & comments. |

i don't think voting on the thumbnail images would be fair at all. i know i wouldnt want to be judged on a 50x100 pixel image, or whatever the size is! |

Hmm maybe you missed the bit where I said first pass. A lot of people already do this and then proceed for a second pass to vote full screen and make comments. This would just make THIS system easier.
Don't forget voting systems are like challenge interpretations....many and varied! |

Does not appear to be working for me. Loaded up the script in Greasemonkey without trouble, but it doesn't seem to recognize my input. Firefox 2.

I like using the numeric key pad on my keyboard and think it would be nice when the picture loads you could for example press 6 and it would log your score and go to the comment section. If you want to comment do so and press enter. If you donĂ¢€™t want to comment just press enter. Comment or no comment, when you press the enter key it would take you to the next picture.
I believe this would save time. The way we vote and comment now we use the mouse and keyboard. Going to or having an option to keyboard vote would, IMO, keep me focused on the photograph while I vote. |
I like it though I think it would reduce (even if just slightly) the number of comments left for people as it requires you to leave the fast moving keypad and go over to the keyboard.
Ultimatley, I'm all for it, especially when you have something like a Free Challenge with over 600 entries.

Hmmm. I wrote and tested the script in Firefox 2. Does anything happen (like the javascript error icon turns red)when you use either the top row numbers or the number pad or are you just getting nothing? |

I solved it, thanks! I had forgotten about another extension I was already using that was making use of those keys. |

Great! Just for future reference what extension was it?
I have also updated the script. You can see my post about it here:
