I am getting ready to get a camera as a backup to my dslr. I have narrowed it down to the Canon S3 or the Fuji S9100 anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance.

If you get the Fuji and you'll need another set of lenses...

Both are fixed lens.

For a prosumer camera, it is tough to beat the image quality of the Fuji. The colors are exceptional!

My aunt has an S3 she takes lousy photos but I doubt that is the cameras fault. It is certainly a fairly tough little camera though because she has dropped it numerous times and it still works.

edit, quoted the wrong post,

I was comparing the Canon S3 and the Fuji 9000 (I'm guessing the 9100 is an update). As I recall, the main differences (besides file size) lie in the Fuji being a "manual" camera, with zoom and focus rings on the lens barrel, and the Canon using a more typical zoom button and the 4-way controller for manual focus.

The Canon can be used one-handed (which I needed), while I think the Fuji needs two hands all the time.

The s9100 has a lousy burst mode, like 3 fps for 3 frames.
It has good low light and can shoot raw.
The Fuji has better manual operation through the zoom ring but is as large/er than a eos400. The Fuji starts wide.

The s3 is cheaper. Better video. 3fps until card is full. Best macro mode(will focus on its lens, well dirt on lens). And its smaller and the screen more articulate. The canon has the faster lens. And a better operating system. Excellent battery life.
One handed operation is handy.

Its a toughy.
But I think you are comparing the wrong cameras.
Should be, Sony R1 vs Panasonic fz50 vs Fuji s9100
I would go the R1, then probably the FZ50, then the s9100. Depends if you need wide...

Between Canon and Fuji, I think Canon will be much better. The sensor and processor are both great. Having said that, why don't you also look at the Panasonic FZ-20/30/50. Not just because I am using it, but they both are very nice. The Canon uses 4 AA type batteries, so that may (or may not) be a problem. The flip screen is a plus. I would still buy the FZ-20, because the newer models don't really do much, except cramming more pixels onto a small sensor.

The FZ30-50, Have much better screens. Wheels for both aperture and shutter. Manually linked zoom (slower lens though by a little). A high speed-auto focus mode which in good light is comparable to a D SLR. Also the manual focus is improved on the screen so that u can now tell for sure if the shot is crisp. In low light the Processor uses a nine pixel read out for the screen so that It is much more usable.
FZ50 has a TTL flash hot shoe.

Love my FZ20 though.

Stick with Canon.

I don't know what materials this canon's constructed of, but i know that the SB series cameras are built like tanks. The metal body takes a beeeeating, though not suggested of course ;)

Fuji

I owned the Fuji S7000, then the S5100, now the S5200 (which I use when I go somewhere I do not want to take my Canon XT, like a dugout canon) and in about six months, I will buy the S9100 (unless they come out with an upgrade first).

Fuji does color better than any other digital camera.

I think the S3 has a polycarbonate body, not metal.

Right... I'm biased towards the Fuji (having used the S5600), but in all fairness, here's what I think are the major key decision points (applicable to most) between both cameras:

Canon S3
stabilized lens
faster lens (F-stop numbers)
swivel LCD screen
compact sized (but not pocket sized)

Fuji S9100
lower noise
28mm wide angle (watch out for F4.9 at 300mm though)
tilt-only LCD screen
9MP & RAW capable
has a hotshoe (non-TTL)
