This is kind of a neat opportunity:

Be a National Geographic Photographer

Take your best shot—and send it to us. 'Your Shot' features editors' selections from photographs submitted online by our readers each month. Submit a favorite photo of your own, on any topic of your choosing, for possible publication in an upcoming issue of National Geographic.

'and you grant to National Geographic Society and its subsidiaries and licensees (the "NGS") a royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual license to display, distribute and reproduce the Photograph, in whole or in part, in any medium now existing or subsequently developed for editorial purposes without further review or participation from you.'

Seems like a rather cheap way for them to get their photo stock...

Unfortunately an all to common way for companies to get stock photos. They take full advantage of the fact that with todays great cameras, even casual or recreational photographers can occasionally get an amazing shot. They then naturally would love to see it in a magazine.

It is not their fault that they do not realize they are wrecking the industry for people trying to make a living at photography.

Just my 2 cents.

Apparently they do this every month, but I wonder, do they mean no editing whatsoever?
