| Do you personally felt much difference in speed when using a normal CF card (eg 1.5MB/s write speed) with those 50x CF cards (eg 8MB/sec write speeds)? The price is almost doubled between the cards of the same capacity, so I'm curious to know from you guys if it's worth the extra money. Thanks |

SanDisk is funny, it's kinda' hard to find exactly what their speeds are. But I can tell you that the difference between the standard cards and the Ultra II line is noticable (Actually, now that I think about it, the Ultras probably run at about 8MB/sec). The standard cards do everything MUCH slower, to the point that I hardly use the ones I have anymore and just stick with the Ultras.
From what I've seen, the price difference isn't that big. Keep an eye on the Sunday flyers in the paper, they go on sale at Staples all the time. I think 512 Ultra IIs are usually about $50, which isn't too bad.

I think that there are 2 times when speed on a CF card matters. Burst mode when filling the buffer, and when you download your card. If neither require speed for you then save some money, otherwise you will regret having a slow card when it really counts. This is of course just my little opinion, your Mileage may vary.

Isn't a lot of the speed based on what the camera can do as well? I use the Sandisk Ultra II cards and I know in my wife's 350D they go a bit faster than on my 300D!

so in general, they do makes things faster, eh?
If that's that case, I'll look only for the Ultra-II cards.
Thanks fellas! |

| THIS should answer your question, and NewEgg.com is a good source for low prices. |

Low-priced doesn't have to mean low quality or low performance. Here's a good one for $47 shipped. My main card is a Transcend 2gb (about $3 more). You may not notice much difference with a high-performance card in a CoolPix camera, but if you ever upgrade or get a fast card reader, the difference will be huge.

Oops, I mean "low priced" as in those standard speed cards, not steal deal ones :) Anyway, do you mean the speed increase isn't noticable in a camera, but only at the card reader? Hope you aren't referring to the Coolpix under my name - I'm planning to get a speedy CF card for my next camera. This Coolpix is so slow, I dont think the card makes any difference! |

Usually the grade of the memory increases as well, thus good reliability. As the previous post mentioned, not always the case though.
Quicker to download images. Less time spent clearing the buffer. On my FZ20 I tested allot of cards and the shots in a burst. From 20x-60x-133x. The 20x floundered after less than a dozen pics, the 60 less so and the 133 shoots until the card is full as far as I can remember. Hardly scientific but that was my experience.
Burst mode is a very handy feature to have for portraits, sport etc... as you can imagine.
With a weirdo SLR like the Panasonic DMC-L1(Disappointment of the year!!!) which has a small/hopeless buffer it will mean the difference between getting a shot and not.

what is the best combo today?
which card-speed AND capacity have the best value?
I just a point to start somewhere. Thinking of getting a 2GB card to start with but wont mind getting more if the value is better. Thanks! |

Just before we went on vacation this past July...I coughed up for a 4GB Scandisk EXTREME III. It is even faster than the Ultra II that I have for my Rebel XT. It all boils down to what you really want.
I got the Ultra II at Cosco for $89 last year (1GB)and the new card (4GB)was around $200 (which included shipping from California)and actually comes with recovery software for the card. Hope this is helpful.
