FINALLY! now we seem to be headed in the right direction. After falling into the 4.6's it's nice to be nearing at least the 5.0 mark.

It's been awhile since I've entered any challenges here, although I follow and start various threads. I thought/hoped my skills were improving, but my scores so far don't seem to indicate it *sigh*

Hmmm... the scores seem low for a portrait challenge. What's going on?

I got one comment but it's so useless that I may as well have no comments. For a 4.5641 image where I tried something a little different I was hoping to get lots of comments of the "great" or "yuck" variety (preferrably the former) but not at 78 votes I don't.

The only positive is that with the Free Study in voting this low score will not have such a big impact on my average as the vote count should be low on this one.

Still in the running for the Deb Award, so don't give me any comments. Apparently y'all don't like it anyway, don't waste your typing skills on it.

Started out somewhere in the 4.9 range and went down from there.

Wow, I started at around 5.7, dropped like a stone to 5.2, leapt back up to 5.8 and now I'm in freefall again...I'm feeling seasick.

Hypothetical Question:

Let's say someone takes a shot at the last minute, gets carried away with thinking it's great, and enters it - only to wake up about a minute after midnight to the realization that it is not one of his best. In fact it would have been wise to just go to bed early and let the challenge go with one less entry.
Furthermore, let us suppose that, although the shot is riding at a higher-than-it-deserves 4.5, said someone gets a validation request from the SC for this shot.
Now if the shot survives the DQ it will only serve to embarrass and bring down an overall average. And if it does get the DQ the embarrassment is there as well --but the question is this: Does a DQ'd image affect a members average score?
I'm thinking that if the answer is no, then perhaps there are times when a DQ isn't such a bad thing. If embarrassment is in the cards no matter what, then saving the overall average seems like a good idea.
On the other hand, a poor picture submitted really should face criticism and the score is what it is. Why shouldn't the overall average reflect everything submitted?

Astute readers that you are, you know I'm talking about my own shot. This is a new scenario for me, and I have mixed feelings about it. If I deserve the DQ, I'll accept it gracefully and try to not make the same error in the future. But I'm not clear on the affect this can have on my average. I looked through the rules and did not find anything. My apologies if I just missed it.
Thoughts and/or any knowledge on this would be appreciated.

It won't have any affect. Generally speaking, you're better off avoiding a DQ so you can withdraw an image if you REALLY need to. You'll be forbidden from requesting a self-DQ if you already have one in your last 25 entries, and suspended if you get DQ'd twice within 25 entries.

I'm disappointed in how much this one fell last night. Still plenty of time for it to come back though...... *rubs her lucky rabbits' foot*
