helpful tutorial

If this has been posted before..maybe new folks will find it helpful.

Lower right hand side-tips/techniques......sharpening raw images. It's a very good explanation and tells a bit about how your camera sees images.

Incidentally, to play opposites, I will add that many people will leave off sharpening until after they have had a brief go of it with Neat Image for many shots.

Of course a secondary possibility is to use a NI image as a layer on an image already sharpened, but things do tend to get a bit more advanced when considering multi-layer sharpening...

The area I was most interested in regarding RAW image sharpening was not covered in the tutorial. It discusses RAW images and the sharpening issues related to them, in-camera sharpening and Photoshop USM (but not Smart Sharpen) sharpening.

What it doesn't discuss is the use of the sharpening slider in the RAW image converter. That is what I'm most interested in.

I don't like the idea of applying camera sharpening at all because that is captured in the original image. If overdone, it cannot be undone. However, if you apply "camera" sharpening with the sharpen slider in the RAW image converter and overdo it then you still have the option to go back and undo it.

Sharpening is a crutial part of digital imaging and I still continue to have difficulty getting it right. My only saving grace is that to this point I've applied most sharpenning as the last step to create an output file from my master and is not saved. If I ever get it figured out I can still go back and correct all my old images. ;)

In CS2 you have the option of sharpening for viewing purposes only. I use this, I know then if the image will sharpen to my satisfaction later on in the workflow.

Edit: I am talking about the raw converter of course.
