Hi guys, my friend emailed me for advice on cameras since I know a thing or two about them. But I don't know much about quality point and shoots these days. I haven't been keeping up. The letter he wrote follows. Wondeing if anyone has some good ideas i can pass along to him...

How are you? Hope all's going well with classes and work, and that you're finding time to enjoy your new camera. Speaking of new cameras...Liv & I are thinking about getting a new camera. I don't think we want to get all that technical with researching it, but I knew that you'd be a great person to get some advice from.

I guess, basically, we're looking to spend about $200 - $300 (tops) on a digital camera. From Liv's perspective, I think she would like it to be easy to use (she's actually taken some photography classes, and knows how to develop pictures too...so she actually knows more about it than I do). Back to Liv...she would like the interface to be easy to use, and I'm sure she'd be interested in the good features. I'm looking for something with decent zoom capability, good memory, and higher quality images to boot. Size and design (from both a stylistic and operational standpoint) are pretty important too.

Liv actually looked at some cameras today when she was at Target...She liked the Canon Powershot S330 Elph, but actually liked the controls of the Olympus FE-190 better.

Hope I've given you some good details. We're not going for professional quality here, obviously, just something we can use easily and that is fairly versatile, while provided good quality pictures. In short, the whole package for under $300 bucks!

Let me know if you have any recommendations!

Lol, sounds like he wants the perfect camera. "Yes, I recommend the Utopia 1000. ...It's perfect." Seriously though, comments welcome.

If I were shopping in that price range, I'd get the Fuji Finepix F20 for $199. The Canon Powershot S3 IS would be my next choice, but it's $340.

I hate to this (give you a slightly more expensive option) but you get huge bang for 325$ or so with the sony super zooms:

sony h2 review

The sony sensors are great and I wish I had this camera.

I've been extremely pleased with my choice of the Sony DSC-W5. Superb quality.

Scalverts suggestion on the Fuji-FinePix is a very good one. The Fuji FinePix models have gotten solid ratings and are a consumer favorite even though they seem to be on the lower price end. Good value for your money there. BIL & SIL have one and it's come through with some good shots.

Always remember to save a few $$$ for a good sized flash memory card.

just a thought (i'm gonna guess you'lll get lots of opinions on this - they want zoom and features and i know the image quality is good with Sony)

forgot to mention, i own an elph as well - it's awesome, but it has almost no manual controls - not exactly something to learn with.

Sweet, thanks for coming through guys, I'll take a closer look at these models later after I get off work. Good point about the memory card as it relates to cost.
