I've been looking for a way to travel the world for about 3 years now.

I'm still in my college town...so obviously my search has been inconclusive. So far.

I'm thinking about starting a little business called The Roaming Photographer. Basically it will make me absolutely no money at all....and will take up almost all of my time. The idea behind it is:

I will take your pictures for free, wherever in the world you are. The only catch is you have to pay for my gas/plane ticket to get there and for food. At first I thought it would be more of a national thing...just in the U.S. but eventually it could go glabal depending on the reception.

I would have a contract for people to sign and have them pay a $100 deductable...the rest would be paid after the pictures are taken. If you think about it....I live in Kansas, the middle of the United States, so it would be about equal distances to go to basically anywhere. Food would not exceed $25 and I would save all reciepts to make it all legal. All in all....it would probably cost less for someone to pay me to come to them and take their pictures for free than to pay a local photographer full price.

You may ask what is in it for me? Well...I get to travel and see the world, plus take pictures and meet interesting people. I would work for two weeks and then take two weeks off and work at my normal job to maintain bills and whatnot.

So I ask you guys. With enough promotion and advertisement do you think that my idea is a feasable one? I'm just looking for some input. Anything and everything.

It seems smarter to use someone locally, pay less money in the long run and have closer access to the photographer that took the pictures, if any extra work needs to be done. Paying for airfare, gas and food probably make the deal a wash unless they really want your eye.

why would someone pay your travel expenses when they can open the yellow pages and find a few hundred local photographers?

I think the issue would be stringing together logical jumps in the right time frame - might be possible but the logistics could be a hassle. The jumps would need to be close enough so that the travel costs to the person are less than a local photg. The marketing would be hard against locals but it might be possible. Plus as pawdrix says, most people prefer a local anyway for future work.
