Photography is my part time job. I shoot some weddings and other kind of ceremonies, some books for models and this kind of photography.

But I don't have a studio. And I think that if I had one I vould get more clients, due to more public exibition. But only the space (a store for example) is very expensive, even for renting.

Sometimes when I want to do a boook for a model and I need a studio I have to rental one. There's only a few in Portugal that you can rent, the others are closed to external photographers. I don't know if there's no market for renting (for example I can't find anywhere cameras or lenses for retal) of if the market is not developed.

If I mount a studio with conditions so I could rental it to other photographers that like me don't have studio I could save some money to pay for the studio expenses.

Does this sound smart to you? Could you please tell me how foes it goes in your countries. People woth no studio do they rent one to shoot? It's easy to find a studio out there? Is it expensive?

I have an open mind and a lot of ideas. If you could please contribute with your knowledge and experience I would be much apprecciated.

Thanks.

Do you know other photographers that would be interested in this? Is there a demand for studio space rental in your region?

You should treat this as a business and draw up a COMPLETE business proposal. Do all the resesarch on everything -- costs, demand, what price the market will bear, etc. This is what's going to make it clear if it really makes sense to move forward.

Here is a website for a rental darkroom/studio business if you want to see what the US rates are.

When I had my business in San Diego with a 2,500 sq ft studio, we always allowed other shooters to rent it. One of us was always there when they used it, until we got to know them well enough to trust them. Our gear (whatever was not available to the renters) was locked in a storage room. It was a decent source of income towards the overhead. We charged a refundable deposit for wear-and-tear, incidentally. If someone messed the place up (so we had to repaint the floor of the cyclorama for instance) then they had to pay for that.

When I moved to Carmel, I rented studio space as needed and use of a darkroom on a monthly basis from another photographer there, and that worked fine for me.

Thanks Robert.

I know only 2 studios in Lisbon that are for rent. I was in a workshop in one of them about a year ago in one of them and it was then that I knew that it could be ret. Some people where very happy to know that.

Yes its smart.. I think it would be of real help to others starting out and the fact that sharing the cost of expenses power, space, phone, all the bills that goes along with business will only give more profit to each photographer renting space... as well as to the start up person...

Go for it... Start a group local to find interested people...
