Don't know what kind of lighting u have, but you can try and do some shadow work, low-key photography using simple objects and shapes...
Edit : If you have a good magnifying glass, you can do some macro work with that too. Try practicing with that.

Nice.. then do the magnifying glass thing. Or if you have useless objects, try throwing them on the floor and shooting them as they break. Maybe old cups and plates. If you can find some leaves, light them from behind and take photos of that, filling the frame with the patterns. It makes good abstracts. |

You're welcome. It is 2 am here and I have a paper tomorrow so I am up. Will post more ideas as soon as I think of anything interesting. |

Get a largish sheet of white, translucent material, like a plastic cutting board (what I use) and bridge two chairs with it so you can put a light on the floor shining up at it. Photograph thin things (including things you can MAKE thin by slicing them) totally backlit and get comfortable with rendering translucency. That's fun :-) You'd be amazed what looks weird... Try a slice of wonder bread :-)

Try painting with light. My camera only goes to 8 seconds, but I did manage to do a lot of interesting things. Point and focus your camera towards a wall, and then turn off the lights and set the camera for a long exposure, like 10-15 seconds. In total darkness make patters with a small light, write your name, make designs. I used a lighter once which has a small red bulb at the back. It is fun. You can also shine the light on the wall for interesting light patterns. |

Awesome idea Bear. Try slicing a lemon or an orange, that'll look good too. |

Darton Drake came to speak to us at the IPPA convention this past week. I found one of his "exercises" to be very interesting. I haven't tried it myself yet, but it sounds like you could right now.
Basically, he had a guy sit on a chair in the middle of his studio. And then he challenged himself to take 50 interesting photographs of him. Basically he had to get high, get low, zoom in, zoom out, etc. I don't think he had the guy move around at all. The challenge was for him, as a photographer, to see the guy in a different way. I think he may have played with the lighting a bit, but that's about it.

Just for the record, cold and wet is a recipe for excellent photo opportunities. |

the result of my afternoon of shooting... another cologne bottle shot :)
it was tough to get the lighting right, i used one 60W work light aimed at the blue BG. This bounced off the background lighting the bottle and also creating the semi-radient bg.
Thanks for all the ideas guys, now i have something to do next time i get bored :)
