Do you know if the adjustment "posterize" is legal in basic or in advanced editing? Do you know if the filter "high pass" is legal in advanced editing?

In basic editing I believe it is a no: Filters: The use of filters (or non-Photoshop equivalent) is strictly limited. Any filter or stand-alone utility designed and used to preserve the integrity of the image and/or reduce the effects of noise, scratches, etc, are permitted. These include but are not limited to the Sharpen, Unsharp Mask, and Dust & Scratches filters, and standalone image cleanup utilities such as NeatImage. However, no effects filters may be applied to your image, with the exception of Noise and Gaussian Blur, which are allowed. Any filter permitted by this rule must be applied uniformly to the entire image. Selective application of any filter is prohibited. .

Advanced editing I would say yes they are Filters: At your discretion, you may apply filters to your photo, in whole or part. (Be aware that extensively altering the "look" of your photograph with an "effects" filter is often not well received by voters.)

"Posterize" as used in Photoshop is a color adjustment, used to (drastically) reduce the number of colors/tones in the photo. The effect can usually be closely reproduced (with more difficulty) using Curves or Levels adjustments. As an "adjustment" it should be legal in Basic if applied to the entire image, unless it serves to obliterate or create something considered a "major element."

You should be able to used the High-Pass filter in Advanced, again, unless it completely obscures or creates a "major element" of the photo.

You can submit before/after versions via the Ticket system if you would like an "informal" opinion from SC memebers regarding a specific image before the challenge starts.
