While I don't necessarily disagree with you on this point, people do need something to talk about during challenges with such apparent definition ambiguity. This isn't so much an everyone-is-wrong-but-me thread, but more so a simple exercise in photo therapy, so to speak.

From research and the three bokeh challenges we've had at DPC, this is what I've learned:

1-Bokeh is a really cool word

2-If it has out-of-focus areas then it has bokeh, not necessarily 'good' bokeh, but bokeh

3-The term has evolved to embrace technical aspects of the optical characteristics of lenses

4-DPC has its own 'circles of confusion' and will revisit and debate what bokeh is each time this challenge topic comes along

That being said, I chose to enter a picture I thought that most viewers would think had a lot of 'good' bokeh and they are liking it. Funny how that works, give the customer what they want and they'll buy it. I'll have to try that in other challenges. :) lol!!

OK..... everything is fine now, as ursula has finally got to my image, and left me a comment, that I really appriciate.....
Thank sweet lady, and you are tops in my book.....
I know I found your image, and I can't wait to the end to see the results of this one as I think I see another "ribbon" for you, as it is an awesome image.....

I think that the right way to describe DPC is: "DPC is one big circle of confusion".

Hmmm... you calling me a dog? If true, you wouldn't be the first woman to make that observation... probably not the last either. ;) ;) lol!!!

No, not at all. It was a rather oblique reference to one of the entries to the challenge. It made me laugh.

Okay, sure there were lots of "huh?" photos in this challenge, but I also saw plenty of very good examples of bokeh. I'll try to comment on some, but I'm finding it difficult to comment on bokeh. Maybe I should learn some japanase.

namaste...

This was my first challenge submission and I interpreted the challenge description as:
Loosely defined, bokeh is the quality and "feel" of the out-of-focus foreground or background elements of a photo. (my bold to emphasise how I read the challenge).
However, having looked at the other entries I can now see a difference between what I would now term ‘bokeh’ and a simple shallow depth of fieldâ€Â¦. Sadly my entry falls into the latter and I’d mark myself down for that. Having said that I feel a lot of the other images fall into the same trap too.
While I’d agree we shouldn’t get too uptight on challenge definitions – the wider the interpretation the more interesting the images – there has to be some structure or else what’s the use of the challenge in the first place. In this case I think ‘Bokeh’ is a fairly definite term – it’s just very hard to describe in words and easier to see in pictures.

Am I just not finding it or did this challenge really spark so much debate that no one started and actual Bokeh III score thread?
