One of my lenses (50mm 1.4) sticks at the infinity point. Its been doing it for a couple of months now, I get around it by switching it to MF and pulling it back a touch, but its not convenient. It feels like there is a grain of sand or something under the focus ring, has a gritty feel.... so ... can I oil it or something? How about wax or WD40?

I wouldn't cuz of the risk of damaging it further. Maybe try some compressed air but even that could cause moisture to get into the lens body. Moisture = mold. Sorry to hear about the defect. Sounds like canon service to me. :-(

Have it serviced unless you know how to take a lens apart yourself.

...and put it back together yourself (ANYONE can take a lens apart themselves).

LOL good point! Guess it'll have to go in for service then, I was hoping to avoid that. :/

Once you take it apart you know how to put it together. Of course you may end up with a few screws and bits left, but that's ok for an amateur. :)

just so yah know, i attempted to take apart a camera last year thinking if i kept everything documented and organized ide be able to put it back together again... turns out its a lot harder than it sounds.

lenses on the other hand are quite a different story, the main thing with the lens is to make sure that you get everything back in place so that the mount works and the aperture works, ofcourse thats for older lenses. For newer lense its a lot harder. This is partially because you have ot make sure not to screw up the wiring and chips inside the lens.

but taking apart things has deffinitely helped me understand how to use the camer better, so if your ever in a store where they have an old camera for cheap, buy it and spend a couple hours trying to take it apart, and learn how it works... the shutter mechanism is really quite a lot cooler than it seems :)

I would keep the lens together or have it professionally serviced.

Or sell it on Ebay with a warning.
