Just saw that there were 441 entries. Wow. I was not gonna vote because I entered, but I guess I should. Even if I get only 50% voted, that is 220 votes. I think it will need all the help it can get. |

If a picture has out-of-focus areas then it has bokeh, by commonly accepted definition, and therefore meets the challenge.
This is more of a composition challenge than anything. It is the way your bokeh highlights the main subject that defines a 'good' bokeh picture, not whether it has little circles or not. There are many creative ways that can be accomplished and I've seen numerous ones in this challenge.

Jutilda, you gave me a sweet score! Thanks for that and the great comment too :) I only wish other voters would see it the way you do.
For the most part, I vote on how an image makes me feel. Technicals be damned (unless of course, something went horribly wrong for the photographer). In this challenge, I'm not looking for how many freakin blades the lens has, I couldn't give two hoots whether or not there are gaussian circles or pretty polygons. If there are and I'm moved by the way they enhance the image overall, I'll vote favourably. If they're absent and I'm still moved by the effect the oof areas have on the image, again, I'll vote favourably.
Simple game really.

I hope she's not done yet, because I dont have a Jutilda comment.... I want a Jutilda comment!
(I do, however, have a Timfythetoo comment - one of the rare times I've received one of those during a challenge. Woo!) |

I hope I wasnt too harsh with you ladies. For some reason I felt more compelled to comment on the good, the bad and the ugly in this one rather than just the good. Not saying that I think yours may have been some of the ugly ones but I think I commented on more of those than others yet. Maybe I just need to stop talking now and quit while I am ahead (or at least quit before I get much further behind.)

Yeah me too; I'm sure I had read Bukakee III.

I have never seen so many DNMC ever! I don't think people know what Bokeh is, don't bother to find out, don't look at Bokeh 1 or Bokeh 2 to see what scored well - they just take a snapshot of their kid and submit it.
Oh well... I have 3 comments all saying that I have good or great Bokeh yet still hanging around the 5.4XX region. Oh well..we will see.

ME TOO!!! I've left some rather harsh (but not rude or unkind) comments to some of my lower scoring votes. I hope they appreciate it.

Some guy told me that "bokeh is not dof" and said DNMC (nevermind that almost 90% of my image is bokeh), and typed out a link to, of all things, an article by Ken Rockwell. |
Yeah I got that too... If my picture is not up to Ken Rockwell standards, then I feel I'm doing something right.
I also did not submit a pic of a flower or of an insect because I knew there would be 100s of them. But I feel I'm losing points for doing that very thing.
I love this comment "PROPER bokeh is background blur, not foreground blur" well excuse ME for doing something different. The challenge rules say it can be either fore or background. I didn't want to do background blur. Fine rate me a 1 then. |

It just amazes me how everyone has to get their 2 cents in on what is or isn't good bokeh while the challenge is actively being voted on.
Pick MY definition - it's the best! No...pick MINE - I'm right! So many images suck. So many images blah, blah, blah...
Gosh. Can't we just let people make up their own minds on how to vote and read the challenge definition? Really quite unbelievable. |

It isn't very interesting by itself, but take a photograph whose subject is enhanced by the bokeh of the background. |

Well, I just voted on all 400+ Bokens, finally some time to enjoy voting. Some great shots, numerous have no clue what boken is, and very few in the middle. My bell curve either looks like a smile or frown, depending on where your shot was on my scale. :) |

I'll just toss these two points in:
1) Jutilda, I'm waiting for a comment. *taps foot* ;)
2) The votes have been all over the place. My score went from 6.0 last night to 5.5 this morning to 5.9 today to 5.6 now. Last 8 votes averaged 4.3. That's much more up-n-down than I usually see; scores swing, but usually not this much.
I have only one comment: because the person could tell what was in the background, it wasn't bokeh. Never mind the circles and the fact it was very out of focus.
Put all that together, and it tells me that no one agrees on the definition.
Vtruan, your opinion might be that people don't know what it is, but I bet that some people you so confidently declared "have no clue" met at least one of the 10,000 definitions floating around.

So, maybe just because I'm an optimist, I like to look at it this way: This challenge is aparently a learning experience for a lot of us! =)
Myself included; I haven't been around too long, but I think I'm about to get my first sub-5 score!

This was my first challenge. I just joined the site and am learning to use PS. I find the negative comments helpful. I wish the site would explain what bokeh is for beginners this would helpful. I truely want to learn...thank you all for the comments. |
