Well, I finally did take the plunge, and ordered the 717 from Butterfly photo in NY. Standard attempts at selling me battery, extended warranty, but not too pushy. Bill was 676.95 with 3 day shipping, and I received an email same day, one day earlier than promised, with a Fed Ex tracking number. So far so good!
I'm so sick of looking at accesories on Ebay I can't even tell you. Can anyone recommend a one stop shop for items? A nice case that will hold future lenses, filters, etc. would be nice. Most on ebay look too small. Also will be looking for memory sticks, filters, etc.
Finally, are there certain lenses that are regarded as better quality that I should look for? How does a 300mm shot with these compare to a DSLR? Anyone have samples they can link to?
Thanks very much

Have a look at this case. It is the one I got for my F717. Not sure if it is exactly what you want, but I thought that if you have the product ID at least, maybe it will make it easier for you to find what you want.

I do not recommend that you but from this site. I only used it as it is the only decent representation of the case I could find.
Hope this helps.

I don't know if you want packages from different companies or not but I bought my memory stick and card reader here
//www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10326541&loc=101
//www.buy.com/retail/searchresults.asp?search_store=1&querytype=comp&qu=MEMORY+FLASH+READER&loc=101&dclksa=1
both had has free shipping and the card has a mail in rebate if you are into that. Rebate is limit one I believe per address/name
good luck

I got a Sony 256MB memory stick on Ebay for $95.00, but everything else I pretty much get locally, either at Best Buy, or a local camera shop. Prices are decent, and I like to have somewhere to go if something goes wrong with a product.

Also I recommend a spare battery. At least I use both of mine.
Actually I have three. |

Can't help with good places to buy since I'm in the UK, but stuff I find indispensible are:
UV filter - always on for lens protection
Polariser - linear are cheaper and work fine with the '707 (so should be fine with the '717 too)
ND filter
Spare battery
Extra memory sticks (I have 4x128 and 1x16)
Memory Stick reader (quicker & easier than plugging camera in)
Manfrotto 055Pro tripod - very pleased with it. Don't skimp when it comes to buying a tripod, it's a false economy and you'll only buy it once.
I have Hoya filters and am very pleased with the quality - reasonable prices too.
As far as bags go, I bought the LCS-FX case with the camera, which is nice and discreet if you're travelling light. Generally, though, I use a LowePro Orion Trekker backpack, although I'm starting to run out of room in that now.
If you like to shoot wildlife, you'll probably need a teleconverter at some point. I have an Olympus B-300 (1.7x) but these can be hard to get now. I've seen nice results from the Olympus TCON-14B (1.4x) and the new Sony TC is supposed to be very good too.
If you like macros, you'll probably find a close-up (diopter) filter or two useful. I have a Hoya +4 and will probably add a +1 and +2 to that.
I should think that'll keep you going for a bit :-) Hope it's useful.

On ebay, go to 47st.photo They have a store and are great to deal with. I got my filters through them, as well as a monopod and memory stick (though there are better prices than theirs on memory sticks).
I just ordered an x-drive so no more memory sticks for me :D.

honestly If I had to reorder my f717 + accessories, I would try and get a package online (ebay). It seems to me you can get pretty much everything you need for about 300 dollars.
I have seen packages with 15-20 pieces that include macro, telephoto, wide lenses, memory, case, flash, tripod, pretty much everything you would need if you are just starting out. |
