Well this is going to be my first one, Boken, that is. I have been reading some of the explainations and I think I get a little more confused with everyone lol. Well, I entered mine and I am hoping to get some good feed back on it.
I feel better knowing I am not the only one learning this now.

"... take a photograph whose subject is enhanced by the bokeh of the background"
Hmmm... can't see the point of a subject at all. If you can nail good bokeh (whatever is considered that may be: circles, polygons, blobs, donuts), the subject could very well be overkill.
Personally, I can see situations - for example, night street photography - where focused subjects are definitely unnecessary as the bokeh speaks for itself. And, after reading this thread, I wonder if anyone is really going to care about the subject anyway.
Yes, I know what the challenge brief states, but is it going to come down to who has the better lens? Because if so, forget the brief altogether. |

I know what you mean...
I followed around a cute college girl with a curvacious figure who swayed back and forth while she walked. I attempted to photograph her 'circles of confusion' but all I got was arrested.

If Bokeh is about shallow DOF then how do you get a focused subject and then an out of focus foreground - as it is suggested is possible in the defintions/guidelines for submissions???
With so much confusion around the topic, it's strange that all the top places in the last challenge were chosen by the community along a very narrow set criteria (however undocumented they may be): bug, bird, flower in super closeup sharp focus, with complimentary fuzzy background that doesn't detract from the subject, but acts as a soft backdrop.
By the way...how do you pronounce "bokeh"?
It's a great technical challenge and maybe this one has been put in place for the newbies (like me) that have joined since the last Bokeh challenge :)... or those who missed out on the last one 'cos they were committed to the alternate challenge. The sporty one this last week was tempting, and a whole lot more open in a way... but just didn't get to a sports field at all.

I wasn't going to enter this week but I just couldn't stand it. Mine definitely has a subject, narrow DOF, but I'm wondering if people will see it as bokeh or a recognizable blurred background. Hmmmm - only time will tell.

IMO, the out of focus background can be recognizable, it just has to be out of focus.

Faery, "shallow DOF" means that the range of distances that are in focus isn't very deep. It doesn't mean that the focused area is close to the camera.
For example, you could take a shot of a distant tree through the tops of tall grass. The DOF might be 4 feet, from 50-54 feet away from you.
Objects 20 or 75 feet from you will be blurry, and objects 10 or 100 feet from you will be even blurrier.
You get shallow DOF typically from wider apertures, or lower f-numbers. Keeping the focal distance the same, F/4 will give you a shallowed DOF than F/20.

Don't you worry..... it is. ;~D I still am amazed at the 100:1 ratio that this challenge has against the "empty stadium" one.

Remember, there HAS to be a winner. Okay, so, it might be on a score of 3.25, but There Has to be a winner ;) :)

Well, I changed my mind and entered something I shot earlier in the week. Decisions, decisions. Good thing I have to leave for a few hours, or I'd probably change my mind 5-6 more times. ;~O

I'm in, had something for the After the Game, but I feared the DNMC wrath. The low number of entries made it very tempting.
The Bokeh session came out well. So I'll be dancing with the big crowd.
Good luck everyone!

Inny. Well, it was hard to get, because we have had nearly non-stop rain. Not a lot of lighting choices, but there was one morning when the sun was shining for about 3 minutes. That was when I got it. Since I had so little choice, it probably will be a bad score, but I just couldn't resist entering something.
Good luck to all.
