I'm trying to decide among three pictures which demonstrates shallow DOF best. It's for a contest I want to enter and I would love any feedback folks are willing to offer.

Also, please comment on color if you can. My video card has crapped out and I am awaiting a new one. I touched these images up on a computer at work.

Thanks!

I like the middle one best. Nice DOF. The main part of the shell is very crip. The colours of the middle shell are better than the first, which seems a little blown out. I'm not keen on the flower shot. The DOF seems extreme on it. Might work better witha little more DOF.

As for the colours, the seem just a little muted. (But that's just me. I like vivid colours)

Good luck.

I like the middle one best. If you are just trying to demonstrate DOF you might try showing the entire DOF blurry sharp-blurry-instead of just sharp-blurry. Angle it a bit and get it out of the bulls eye might help too.

The middle one for sure. The first is a goes from sharp to blurred very smoothly, but the fact that the front 'ring' of the shell is in focus in the second, while the rest of it isn't, gives it a more dramatic feel. The colours are much better in the second too, and I think they're fine as they are.

Is this the aspect you must use or could you enter a square crop? I think it would look great with the ends trimmed off.

Well, the only problem with a square crop is printing it. It has to be a physical print to enter the contest.

I haven't done any cropping on these yet, though I certainly intend to when the video card arrives this week.

Well, just to be different, I like the middle one best too :-) Lighting is better than the first one and the third one looks like it's out of focus (I know this was intentional but it looks less so than the other two, IMHO).
