Went on a great three hour spelunking trip with my 6-year-old today to Ape Cave near Mt. St. Helens. Ape Cave is a 2 mile long lava tube. We did the upper portion today which is fairly hard with a great deal of scrambing over rock piles and climbing some other obstacles.

The first shot is just sorta for fun. It isn't that great. I really like the second shot, but the 640 px canvas doesn't do it justice so I decided not to enter it into Free Study.

Very cool. I've been caving once, in Arkansas.

Are there several places along the lava tube where light comes in? The thing I rememebr most is how incredibly dark is was inside the caves.

No the spot you see is the only place in two miles other than the two enterances.

Yes...with the lights off, it is darkness on a whole 'nuther level.

Hey, I've been there! I climbed St. Helens three summers in a row: '91-'93. The second year, we walked through Ape Cave before going up.

It's a really cool lava tube. :)

The darkness was kinda creepy and kinda fun. I was glad we all had flashlights!

I did try to use Leroy's suggestion to mask off the bright areas and reduce the NI there. I think it helped a bit, but the shot, overall, was just so technically challenging that it may have been beyond getting.
